Personally, I think that Ireland will become the next Test playing nation. They are proving that they have the talent to become the next full member. They now have numerous players playing country cricket and have 2 players ineligable because they have played for England.

However if Ireland are to ever become a Test playing nation the laws needed to be changed now to stop England from selecting Irish players thus making them ineligable to play for their own country from there on. Irish international cricket won't improve dramatically if there best players can't play for them. Think about the team they would have if all their players were ineligable. They'd have blokes Morgan, Joyce, Porterfield, N. O Brien, K. O Brien, Rankin. I strongly feel that a team including those 6 guys would definately have the potential to make the transition into Test cricket within the next decade, however it's going to be alot more difficult with the loss of their 2 best players, so the laws need to be changed now.

Thoughts?

It might be out of the hands of the cricket boards to change the laws, as with Kolpak. The fact is, if a player has a British passport he can play cricket for England.

If you want the Irish players to keep playing for Ireland you have to give them test status. I can't see that happening right now but I'd like the ECB to create an FC entity in Ireland and let them play in the county championship first. Aside from county members would anyone honestly miss one of the east midlands Kolpak counties?

Give Ireland five years of playing together and I think they would be ready.

Yes they would - destroying 100 years of history is not an option.

Some counties are rubbish though, bringing in an Ireland team would be really good for international cricket wouldn?t it. This is what I wanted Bangladesh to do when they first came into test cricket. Giving a group of players the chance of playing together for a couple of years would be really good. Would the ECB be able to fit another team into the county system, there are already so many so would another one really matter.

Ireland and Scotland play in the Friends Provident Trophy, our 50 over competition. Not in the County Championship though.

Yeah I was aware of that. But is there any chance of Ireland playing in the county championship in the future. Plus don?t a lot of the Irish players play for other teams, getting them to play together would be really good.

This wouldn't make any sense though, where would the point be of giving them full international status if they are only playing some county sides in England? You may aswell just give all the county's international status but the one flaw is that they aren't all a country.

If you gave them the full international status it wouldn't make sense to give them the full ODI status, feel free to let them play the counties in Friendly's and warm ups but if they were a full odi nation it wouldn't be feesable to let them play in the FP and the County Championship. If they do get full ODI status then they need to be withdrawn from the FP trophy in my view.

Ireland do have full ODI status and got it in 2007.

Why on Sky did they just talk about giving it to them then? They still have to qualify to the World Cups though?

EDIT: They were given the status for 2 years so it runs out at somepoint during this year.

By qualifying for the 2007 World Cup, Ireland gained full ODI status which expires this year.

That was temporary for 4 years.

We could have 3 divisions of 7 with Ireland, Scotland & Holland participating in the CC.

Was only 2 years actually, ends at some point this year.
