Boyd Rankin quits Irish cricket for Test dream

Ignoring the racist tone here. Let's look at the logic and laugh:

Bopara: Indian family, born in England, so is classed above as Indian.
Trott: English family, born in South Africa, so is classed above as South African.

If that isn't double standards, then I don't know what is. Last time I checked though, all of those players classed as South Africans, either have English family history, or literally have an English (or British) parent, so where they're born doesn't really matter.

Lets stop this about Ireland though. I don't think you lot were complaining when Ireland first started competing and most of the team were Aussies. So to paint them as victims is a bit rich.

Cricket is a strange sport really. Far too insular at its peak. It's a shame that a lack of potential test cricket all but forces many of the Irish players to follow a different path at some point in their career. I agree it's a bit weird with Rankin though, he's not that young and I can't see him ever getting a test cap.

Ha ye that's the thing in England. Most of my Asian friends i grew up with in Manchester support either India or Pakistan. Very few of them actually want to play for England or support England.

So essentially blokes like Bopara, Patel, Solanki, Mahmood, Panesar, Varun Chopra, Amjad Khan, Shah are/were a minority.

Bopara and Samit are Indians, it's a general statement, a wrong one at that though. They've been born and brought up in England and so it's understandable that they are English, unlike Pietersen. I understand his parents are English but he was born and brought up in South Africa and played most of his cricket there. Morgan & Joyce are from Ireland but then that's a whole different story, their parents are Irish and they were born and brought up there. If they want to play for England, it's their choice. Ireland doesn't play test cricket and that's why these players leave Ireland cricket team and come to England.

Boyd Rankin is doing the same. He wants to play test cricket and he'd get the opportunity only if he plays for England, however I don't see any point in this. England have already got plenty of great bowlers playing for the international team and in the county. Getting someone from the Irish cricket isn't something England cricket needs at the moment. This move is unnecessary if anything and that's ECB fault. I mean, in my opinion bowlers like Onions, Finn, Tremlett are better than Rankin? Isn't it?

I thought this thread was to discuss about Rankin's Irish retirement, the void left in Ireland's ranks with his departure, whether he is actually good enough to play for England or not and how Ireland is being robbed of good talented players in this process. The discussion has taken a U-turn with guys discussing more about players of Asian origin who're playing or have played for England .

Frankly I'm a little surprised this has all turned into a "how English is England?" thread, and that moderators haven't removed half of it for being a) somewhat off-topic, b) trolling and c) origins/racial discussion

If Rankin qualifies/is eligible for England then that is all that needs to be discussed. If this thread were solely about "how English is England?" then I think the mods would have deleted it already
