Ireland and England

Personally I don't think crowbarring them into the County Championship is the right way to go. Certainly at the expense of some of the more unpopular counties, they might be unfashionable at the moment but they have much more right to be there than Ireland do. I would think some of the minor counties pushing for first class status would be pretty upset too.

Ideally they need to be playing test matches. I don't think they have anywhere else to go as an associate and they need to take that step up, no point in pussy footing around just because Bangladesh haven't really gone anywhere. Give them test status, let Joyce and Morgan play for them and maybe the ECB can even help out hosting a few "home" series.

^^ I like the idea. Give them test status. Let them, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe (if allowed ofcourse) play each other to improve. Give NZ and West Indies some test matches as well as opposed to continous limited over cricket. Wouldn't hurt them. Have an occassional England v Ireland series and once they pull off a series of wins then give them a go at touring places like Australia, India and South Africa. A lot of people lament about Bangladesh but lets not forget it took India, Pakistan, NZ and South Africa decades to get to the standard. With a bit of luck Ireland could pull an SL and be a force.

Agreed that India and Pak took some time, but not SA,they were really up to it.
SRL was a different story altogether.

In todays' time, the ICC needs to set a definite limit for a nation to improve, otherwise its just puring in money for no reason. If Bangla cant improve after ten years, they 've gotta go.
Give someone like Ireland or Netherlands test status for the next ten years,And if they do win against any country extend it.

A team should only get test status if they have a legitimate first-class competition, and Ireland doesn?t have that. What needs to happen is to get Ireland playing together within the England county championship and all there under 19 prospects have too be looked after. It?s all well and good to have a good team right now, but how good will they be in five years time.

Give them Test Status now and they will beat a Test Nation within the next 5 years.

Don't count in Bangla as a Test Nation. The Irish could surely rise to the occassion.

If you give them Test status then you can stop the English taking their players. But until then, can we really punish Irish players from wanting to play Test cricket? If they were to get Test status, they could use the County system to bring up some of their up and coming players. This would ensure they continue to have fresh talents for the next generation.

That's very debatable, how many of their players have good first-class records.

England don't just take their players, they have a choice in the matter. The reason most of them don't play in the FP Trophy for Ireland is because the money's clearly not as good. Why bother playing for Ireland and only getting a few games, when you can join one of the Counties, earn more money and have a chance of playing Test cricket for England.

Giving Ireland Test status just wouldn't be of any use to anyone. Sure they'd get a few more games, but they'd get trounced. Bangladesh have a bad enough record, and they're a better side than Ireland (1 match in a T20 competition isn't enough to prove otherwise). Maybe in 10 years or so, but they shouldn't even be considerered for Test status atm. We don't need anymore rubbish Test series. Also, Ireland wouldn't even be the strongest side in the County Championship if they got in, so why give them Test status? Why aren't Durham CCC being put forward for Test status? They'd probably perform better than Ireland.

Because Durham CCC is not a country.

It was a rhetorical question. Obviously Durham aren't a Country. It was more to illustrate my point that if Ireland couldn't even beat the likes of Durham and Notts, how could you expect them to perform at Test level, against the best sides in the world? They're not good enough, simple as. We don't need anymore whipping boys in Test cricket, enough boring series atm without having another crammed in.

I think he was being sarcastic. :p
