The Silver membership lets you download arcade games, demos, game add-ons, trailers, use voice chat etc. but not online play - it is stupid that you have to pay for it but I suppose it is good, there's very rarely any downtime and it runs quickly.
Can you get the PS3 fixed under warranty? Normally they are pretty reliable, you would be extremely unlucky to have it pack up on you twice if you got it fixed I think.
It's only a fiver a month for Live membership and it's completely worth it in my opinion.
AhhhThat's always the way with things which have a warranty isn't it... It works flawlessly for the duration of it and then shortly after it stops working...
I'd assume that's what they mean when they say they don't do servicing, i've never had to do it myself though so can't talk from experience - it's up to you, I warn you one thing though, the 360 is pretty loud (less so if you install games, but still not quiet) and this can get annoying...
Xbox Live subscription cards can be bought from various websites online cheaper than they are through Microsoft themselves, here's the cheapest i've found it, ?25.77:
- BoxedDeal.com : Xbox 360 Live 12 Month Gold Code Emailed
As i've said before, they are almost the same feature wise and I think all the best games are multi-platform...
Apart from Mass Effect. That really is worth getting an Xbox 360 for alone.

Apparently the Xbox Elite comes with 'Silver Membership' for Xbox Live. Can you play online games with that? Bloody ridiculous that you have to pay for online gaming (if that's the case)! And what I don't get is Games For Windows Live is free, so why not Xbox Live?
Edit: @Madman, thanks for all the info. Apparently, this '80105' or whatever the hell it was error message was a frequent occurance with the PS3. Do we know if that was one of the things they worked on for the new slim one? As I said before, it's not my machine, it's my nephew's and he's understandably wary about just getting the PS3 fixed, only for the error to happen all over again. The Xbox Elite doesn't have a Blu ray drive does it, so that's one less thing to go wrong. To be honest, no one here really gives a damn about watching Bluray films - a DVD on a big screen is fine for me. I don't think the price difference between Bluray and DVD is worth it and yes, I have seen Bluray films.![]()
