@ WC... We did manage it for Few hour's but its year's that aussie's have been no 1 in Test..

Atleast Indians are becoming No 1 in all forms but Australia look creepy at No 4..... Touring WestIndies and Wining Test 3-0 is not a big deal and we will do that to when they tour us in November next year... Tell them to beat SA.. They Lost even Against India in 2007 in home series... won the Series just by Cheating and making fool of them... What did they get by that??
Lost Common Wealth 2-0 by Young Indians... Lost T20 Semi Final against india..

Lost 2-0 In Test Series in India

Lost Hayden with poor form

Lost Gilly With Poor Form tooo

Lost Symonds in Monkey Buisness:p:p

highlander, that is unfair though, India did beat england in england in 2007 the last time they toured.

TBF, they only won the test series 1-0 and England almost had the first test in the bag before the rain saved India. Hardly a convincing display. Also (and this is going from the 1st test) 5 of the players in that England XI aren't in the current XI and it's once again 5 missing from that India XI and their current XI.

and they did markedly better than anyone else had in australia until SA finally went the whole hog and took a series off them.

Never have I said that what they haven't done isn't good, I am just making the point that they need to prove it with wins in Australia and South Africa. I'm sure if you asked any of the Indian players they would say the same thing

And i thought this thread is about Indian ranking 1 thing. :doh

Apparently not, as you were going on about the Ashes and the England team...

why dont YOU get lost, we all know the SIG you had, about the karthik disabled goat etc thing and you changed it a while ago.

Guess why I changed it? Cause I had it for a while and it wasn't funny anymore. And no where have I told you to get lost, I just told you to start acting a bit more maturely or at least make some funny stuff up, on your own

*Sigh* sometimes I do bother why I even try and have a reasonable argument with you, when I know you just are gonna keep coming up with random sentences which make no sense

I'm sure the players would like to achieve those things, but I suppose what it comes down to is that the no.1 ranking does not currently mean what it did 3 years ago when australia were butchering everyone everywhere.

pound for pound I'd say india are the best team in the world, just, but right now the margins aren't large enough to say the the no.1 would beat everyteam everywhere.

just like tennis, sometimes the world no.1 is simply a guy that's managed to pinch a few semi finals in masters events and the odd slam, and sometimes it's a federer like guy who's won every major event over the year

This is True mate... Best Thing said by you in this thread so far

The idea of a "number 1 Test team" in world cricket right now is a silly notion if it is used as the basis of saying one team is better than another. Honestly, the top few teams have been playing good cricket over the last few years and anyone can and have beaten anyone. Cricket is definitely the winner here, now we just need to make sure we don't ruin it with some crappy pitches. :doh

The idea of what the top side is at the moment is a statement that can never be proved. Why? Because Test series' typically last a couple of months and a lot can change over a couple of months. Although it is a great thought exercise to predict how a certain team (England during The Ashes, for example) would do against another team (India during this series), it is simply a thought exercise. You can't actually back up anything and to make any conclusive judgments would just be irresponsible.

All this business of number 1, etc. only serves one purpose--for fans to gloat over some numbers that the ICC put up (I guess the top side also gets a little award at the end of the year). I think we should not think about them too much and instead concentrate on the high quality cricket that is being played (how long has it been since 8 of the 10 Test playing nations are involved in a series' at the same time?) and hope there's more to come.

You and your crappy threads :facepalm you were also holding the 1st spot in ODI few days ago, how long did yo managed to hold it ?? Merely for few hours :laugh Not even a day :laugh

Why do you have to show up in every thread trying so hard to be an Aussie when you actually aren't one? Does someone give you vCash for doing all this? :sarcasm

Can't you guys just let us enjoy it :p.

We beat England in England AND at home. We beat Australia at home and put up a very, very good fight away in a very heated series. We've beaten Sri Lanka when Mendis was still a mystery, touring. We beat NZ away too. We've been pretty dominant, at the very least a very difficult team to beat.

I think we deserve it. But what does it matter, world cricket won't have a solid number 1 for a long time to come. It'll fluctuate between India and South Africa, with teams like Sri Lanka and Australia continuing to make a strong push for it too.

For now, it's just a stat. But it's a nice stat :).

TBH, I didn't really expect us to win the match against Sri Lanka this convincingly, especially after our dismal performance in the first Test. Oh well, I guess such stuff do happen in cricket. :p

Anyway, on the main topic, yeah, we are the number one, but as Sohum has already mentioned, there's hardly any difference between the top four sides of the world. Anyone can beat anyone anyday. It's severe type of neck-to-neck fighting, and the present ranking table might get turned upside-down anyday. Well, that being said, I'll surely agree that we have been somewhat better than the other three teams, in terms of recent performances. Now we will just have to keep up the good work. You know what? Becoming the number one is indeed important, but staying number one for a long period of time; that's much more important. I do have full faith in MSD's boys, let's see what happens now.

Ideally we should celebrate only if India win at Mumbai in the next test and become No.1 for sometime. If we draw the next test, we lose the No. 1 spot and its not an ideal situation for us.

But India have been a very good test side in the last few years. We beat England in England, we beat New Zealand in New Zealand, we have beaten Australia at home (remember we lost to them in 2004 at home), we ran Australia so close in Australia (SCG'07?:D). Our loss to SL in SL was mainly due to the Mendis mystery (floundering against Mendis helped Murali at the other end to tighten things even more). We deserve the No. 1 ranking if it comes but we are one of the top 2-3 sides in intl test cricket.

Are you serious? India have played Australia (with Hayden, Lee,Clark) , England , Sri Lanka and New Zealand since that series against South Africa which was a 1-1 draw. Thats hardly an easy list of fixtures. We beat Australia far more convincingly than SA or England and those were not on typical Indian dust bowls either.

Eng,SA,Aus,NZ,SRL are the sides we played against in the past 4-5 series. What is your definition of quality opposition then?

Slovakia, Timbaktu and Somalia. ;)

Might have jumped the gun on this thread mate, if India don't win the 3rd Test you'll have to change the title and all this discussion will be in vain.

The number 1 ranking has been a very close race for the last year. Everyone will have a different opinion as to who is actually number 1 but I think we all can agree that AUS IND and SA (alphabetical order) are the top 3.

Thats all that matters, since each team could probably beat the other, both home and away.

Over the next few years we will really see who will be the dominant force in the 2010s

This is pretty stupid as the last really decent team that India played in Tests was back when South Africa toured India. If they had the fixtures which England have (i.e. the Ashes, then followed by a tour in South Africa) I really doubt India would be number one. No doubt they have played well, but it has been an easy year for them so far. N.B. this isn't India's fault, they've played well, just not against quality opposition. I say India will only truly be number 1 when they beat Australia and South Africa in Australia and South Africa.

You are a genius sir and you have a solid point. Now ask South Africa, Australia and Sri Lanka to win a series in India then i will say that they deserve the top spot. And england can only dream about that. ;) Its always Indian team who has to prove that they play well in all the conditions what about other teams? How many tests your England team has won in Australia?

India dont have it in them to stay at top for so long. They are not consistent. So far only team that can stay and maintain the top position is Australia. The fight is for second spot. Since india wont play many tests in the next 1-2 years i dont see them at the top for too long.

Not many lately but no Englishmen claims we are the best because of the ICC's silly rankings.

Thats becoz you arent. For that you have to win test matches in places like Australia and South Africa.
