Last week I Elias Waters, Hong Kong Metropolis' sporting correspondent was present at a meeting today where the ICC (International Cricket Council) discussed their plans to give smaller cricketing nations a chance. One of the ideas that was passed today was a future tours program for minnow nations. This new ruling will allow nations in World Cricket League Division 1 and 2 to tour other countries in their respective division.

The other idea that was approved, having been put forward 2 years ago shortly after Ireland impressed in the 2007 world cup was for more money to be invested in regional tournaments promoting cricket in areas where it is an unknown and unliked sport. A European Championship is already being planned and will probably consist of Ireland, Scotland, Holland, Denmark, Italy and the highest placed European team below Division 3.

As some of you may know the Asian Cricket Council has already planned the ACC 2009 Twenty20 Trophy for later this year, this tournament will be tough challenge between Afghanistan, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Hong Kong, Nepal and Singapore.

A proposition has been put forth by rich New Zealand born entrepreneur Eliot Witters who has a keen interest in cricket to both the ICC and the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India,) that for $75,000,000 he buys IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders who came last in the recently Concluded 2009 IPL season. Witters states that he wants to make a team of players who he feels are the best players from associate nations and get them to compete in the IPL. It is unknown about how the BCCI feel about this but fans of Associate Cricket have strongly shown support.

The Hong Kong Cricket team are currently on a plane flying to Kenya to play Kenya in a touch warm up match for the WCL 3 hosted in Tanzania later this month, but before they left coach Steven Atkinson released a fixture list for the rest of the year.

So Drake could have the opportunity to play in the IPL eh? Good old Eliot Witters, but I can't imagine the BCCI or former Knight Riders players will be overly happy! Mind you, they couldn't do any worse than they did in 2009!

They also did badly in 2008 coming 6th. Also they're the second cheapest team
