Ponting is coming to the end of his career. He's had occasional problems with the short ball now and it appears he doesn't have the time to play as he used to.

I will be suprised to see him continue after the ashes series.

Tendulkar should reach the landmark in plenty of time the way he's played in the last 6 months or so.

I think that's the tip that he's starting to head downhill. Never would you see the Ponting of old (or even the Ponting of a couple of years ago) get bounced out like he did against the Windies and Pakistan this summer.

Unless he has a huge resurgence of form, then no. Tendulkar is on the up despite his age and how long he's played. Ponting has look out of sorts lately, nothing like the old run scoring machine of old.

ehh, highly debatable and discussed to death, brought to life and killed again multiple times

The mods even deleted a thread that was created on it around 2 weeks ago before enough members could see it :p.

Thats basically what this thread is asking, because Sachin is close to 100, don't pretend like that is not the issue here.

I wouldn't bet against it however. Without being biased, Ponting is always just one big score off a pile of runs.

Does anyone else agree that 100 first-class hundreds is more of an achievement than 100 international hundreds?

Now we have another debate. Stop trolling the thread get back to the topic.

It's not trolling just because you disagree.

And no, I like Ponting but he can't do it. Too many tons to make in too little time. Like many have said, he's not getting better with age.

The trouble was caused by Extra pace generated by Aamir and Roach. Short balls under 140 KPH are still likely to disappear off his bat.

Ok, I really have a problem with this comment, and all the ones like it recently. Ponting has had short ball problems right back to 1995. Srinath bounced him out in 1999, and he went through a period in 2000 vs WI with being bounced out too. He had a golden period for a few years from 2001 where no-one could bowl short at him and that seems to coincide with the exact period that all the people here have seen him bat. In the 90's he was far from assured against the short ball. So its not like its only just now he's being bounced out.
