The contenders for the spot would be James Tredwell, Adil Rashid and Monty Panesar.

A number 2 spinner would be important for England with the Ashes coming up and spin will play apart in places like Sydney and Adelaide, which would favor England playing two spinners.

Unless Swann is rested for the tests against Pakistan, then we won't find out who is in possesion until the Ashes squad is announced.

Who you think should be England's no.2 spinner?

Rashid, he has been groomed for a spot in the team for a couple years now.

I hope they don't use 2 spinners in AUS without trying it this summer against PAK.

I think KP and Colly provide enough of a 2nd spinner/slow bowler to not have to play another true spinner.

Swann is good enough to hold his own

I always love a genuine second spinner specially in tests and that will be Adil Rashid but he needs lot to learn at the moment how to create variation and how to persuade Selectors to select him as second spinner.

Whoever gets most wickets this season really. There isn't a clear one at the moment.

Themer added 0 Minutes and 27 Seconds later...

at the moment how to create variation

Rashid has all the variation just not the consistancy.

There's a youngster picking up like 0 wickets for his Club this season, goes by the name of Ben Manning. Google him, he's a shoe-in. Heard it here first.

I'd say Panesar isn't really in contention at the moment unless he has a good season. Rashid could come off wonderfully, but if it doesn't he could get smacked. So I'm going for Tredwell in all formats tbh. Decent batter aswell.

Swann is currently miles above anyone and honestly England do not need a second spinner.Rashid is probably the one ahead in the pecking order.

Here is some stats I've found:

County Championship

Rashid (Div 1) - 8 matches, 25 wickets @ 33
Panesar (Div 2) - 8 matches, 13 wickets @ 31
Tredwell (Div 1) - 5 matches, 10 wickets @ 47

Rashid has the most wickets of any spinner in the first division and has batted very well also (averging 44), so he would be the obvious choice for me.

The problem is that the England management don't seem to fancy him for some reason. They're not prepared to give him a run in the side to prove himself, therefor has no chance to impress.

It's hard to project forward isn't it? I mean for the Ashes, Sydney's the last Test and the most likely to play 2 spinners. If England are down they'll want Rashid as the risky play that might get them a win, but if they are leading the series they'll want the safer Tredwell.

Rashid offers variation though due to being a leg spinner, compared to two off-spinners. If you want a second off-spinner, Pietersen can bowl.

I think the question should be a bit more fleshed out into. Since technically England dont have a # 2 spinner of real international quality, to step in for Swann in case on injury in any form of the game.

If Swann gets injured in tests especially, England will play 4 seamers.

No. If Swann is injured England will play certainly another spinner.

Looking at Panesar's figures this season, he looks like he's doing a containing role instead of an attacking role. 13 wickets in 8 matches is not a lot, even for early season. If that's the case then he couldn't be chosen as the no.2 spinner.

I don't believe Tredwell will bowl out too many top-class sides either. He relys on accuracy and flight more than side-spin. I wouldn't back him to bowl the Aussies out on a day five Sydney pitch.

I do believe Rashid could bowl out Australia if he can get it right.

A Swann-Rashid combination would be the best, since it's an offie and a leggie, Swann likes to bowl at 54-55mph while Rashid generally likes to toss it up under 50mph.

Eh?. Totally disagree.

No way can Tredwell or Rashid play as part of 4-man attack if Swann gets injured. Thats suicide. 4 seamers have to play, cant see how anyone can suggest otherwise.
