So,here comes the big question. Do the Irish deserve Test status ?

BD got theirs after a solitary win over Pakistan in 1999. But they have been on a downward spiral ever since.

Kenya , on the other hand have had a single win to their credit in 1996 over the mighty West Indies, a sad outing in 1999, semi-finalists in 2003, but no Test status.

The Irish surprised the Pakistani team in Jamaica. Topped it up with a good show versus the rest of the teams in the S-8 and have defeated England in this edition. This is exactly what brings me to ask the question- Do they deserve Test status ?

As far I as know, their board has applied to the ICC for the same and they have been losing a lot of their quality players to England - Ed Joyce, Morgan, etc

Your thoughts on the above...

I would like them to first play ODI's regularly with the bigger teams and then consider test spot. We just don't want to have another test team that can't compete with the best teams.

Actually not Just Ireland but other associates like Netherland,Scotland,Afghanistan who are putting up a good fight against big teams should be given ODI status and should play big teams regularly.

Well I don't think they should get a test status because of one upset, first we need to see how they handle the remaining world cup matches. Also, would they have the facilities needed for test status? i.e grounds up to Test standard. And odi cricket is alot different compared to Test cricket, one upset doesn't mean they're up to test standard, but if they keep playing how they played today, they should definetly be considered Test status in the future.

And the poll should have another option like 'Maybe after they've established themselves more' or something like that.

Pakistan in 07? Also they're consistently the best Associate nation. Maybe more ODIs before Tests

^OK so one RECENT upset. And really it was only based on one insanely good innings by O'Brien. This doth not make a Test nation IMHO.

Let them play more ODIs against test nations and perform there.

There is a 4 day championship for non-test sides and whilst Ireland are probably the best of the rest in unlimited overs one win certainly doesn't mean they are worthy of test status.
It would however stop England from pinching all their players. How long before O'Brien is wearing an England shirt?

Yes but that was four years ago, I mean they need to beat bigger teams more consistently, so they need to maybe play a few series against teams like WI, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. They need to play against teams other than the fellow associate nations so they can really improve and then maybe Test status should be considered. I didn't write the upset against Pakistan as it was 4 years ago, they need to play better teams more often then we can see if they're good enough.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing, it would be a real shame as I don't want to see all of Ireland's top players going straight to England.

They don't get to play them the rest of the time because none of the top teams want to play any associates.

I don't mean 5-7 match series, just 2-3 match series. I'm not talking about India or Australia, as I said teams like WI, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. Would a short tour against Bangladesh or Zimbabwe really be that hard to organise? If they only play Test nations every 4 years in the world cup (which they won't be in 2015), they won't be able to improve enough to have a test status.

It would be good letting the top associates get more ODI series against the top teams. Having the odd game here and there and then playing in a World Cup isn't going to get them anywhere fast. There is quite a bit of pointless ODI series in the schedule currently, like the SL and India series agianst Australia last year.

When teams tour England they should have a little tri-series against Ireland and the Netherlands. Those countries are never going to get full tours, so you might as well tack it onto England tours.
