Somehow they did. Yeah go ahead
Might there perhaps be room to include Len Muncer in the squad? He was a leg- and off-spinner who biffed it down the order, and it's an absolute crime that he never played for England. I feel like if one-day cricket had existed at the time he would have done, and the 1948 season (906 runs @ 25.88 and 156 wickets @ 17.10) was his career-best. He pretty much carried Glamorgan to the Championship by himself. The player I'd have him replace would be Ken Cranston

Denmark, a team containing mostly club cricketers punched well above their weight once again to put up an excellent total of 238 off their 50 overs, although Herluf Jensen squandered a golden opportunity to become the first Scandinavian cricketer to bring up three figures in the Olympics on 84. Chile's bowlers could do little to trouble the batsmen once they saw off the wily Arthur Tienken for just 1 for 41 off his 10 overs, with their best figures being 2 for 25 off 8 overs by Maurice Jewell jnr.

Chile kept themselves in contention by quite impressively chasing down their target with just 1 ball to spare on the back of half-centuries from John Sutton and Maurice Jewell jnr, son of the esteemed Major who represented them in five Olympic Games on the trot between 1920 and 1936. He proved himself a chip off the old block in a very commanding all-round display where he claimed 2 wickets and scored an impressive 72 with the bat. Denmark, sadly despite not disgracing themselves in any way had now become the first team to catch the boat home from the 1948 Games.

Chile won by 4 wickets (with 1 ball remaining)

Andy Ganteaume might currently boast a Test average higher than even Don Bradman at 112, but simply averaging more than the man after one innings doesn't make you better than him as his style of play still leaves a lot to be desired in this version of cricket. He managed to keep his wicket intact with low risk play until just after the 25th over, but failed to make up for his slow start by being dismissed for a turgid 26 off 72 balls. It was the kind of innings that aided Fiji's cause a great deal in keeping Trinidad restricted, and undercut the momentum provided by more proactive knocks for skipper Jeff Stollmeyer (who even sent out a note to him urging him to get a move on) and Learie's brother Elias Constantine.

Just when one thought the match couldn't possibly get any worse for poor Ganteaume, it did get oh so much worse with him dropping a crucial catch off Edward Cakobau, Fiji's best performing batsman of the day when he was on 31 with half his side back in the pavilion. Even then, Fiji still had an extremely uphill task requiring 32 off the final 4 overs of the match at 8 an over, but Ganteaume made two further costly errors behind the stumps by letting the ball go through his gloves for four first in the game changing 47th over by Lance Pierre, and then again in the 48th over off Prior Jones. Gerry Gomez tried his best to make up for these lapses in the final over where he nearly defended the 5 required but for a thick edge off the final ball that as one might guess again flew over Ganteaume's head for four, giving Fiji their second Olympic victory over a Caribbean nation from as many matches and qualification to the main draw. This is precisely why skills behind the stumps are just as important as in front of them, and Trinidad would do well to take note in their next and final opportunity to qualify for the main draw in the second qualifying aka 'Losers' round.

On a seaming pitch against a very well oiled Dutch bowling attack, Egypt found themselves quite shambolically bowled out for 44 off 19.3 overs - the lowest ever total recorded at the Olympics till date beating France's 50 against Great Britain in 1900, and Argentina's 57 against the United States in 1908. Arie Terwiel, who since his Olympic debut in 1924 has gone on to become the most prolific bowler in Dutch cricket even overtaking several of the legendary Carst Posthuma's records, finally tasted Olympic immortality in his 40s by becoming just the fourth bowler to claim a hat-trick in the Olympics following Tom Jameson, Bert Ironmonger and Clem Gibson. It's been a far from smooth ride for the Dutch legend, with him managing only 2 wickets from 3 Olympic tournaments prior to this one and being at the center stage in 1936, when one of the most talented sides ever produced by the Netherlands fell short of making it to the top 8 in the most gut wrenching manner by just 2 runs against these very Egyptians when Terwiel himself missed the final ball with 3 required.

The ghosts of 1936 were banished in the most ruthless manner possible by Wally van Weelde, who clubbed 4 sixes in his blitzkrieg 35 off just 25 balls to win the match for the Netherlands with nearly 44 overs to spare. They finally made it properly to the main draw of a cricket tournament for the first time since Carst Posthuma retired in 1912.

EGYPT 44 19.3 overs
NETHERLANDS 50/1 6.4 overs

Netherlands won by 9 wickets (with 260 balls remaining)

Man of the match: Arie Molenaar (Netherlands)
