Has Adil Rashid retired from Tests/FC cricket or just choose not to make himself available for it? To me he is easily the best spinner in England.

Is it odd that I would rather us lose by 90 runs than 9? Hurts that much more.

No. 10 and 11 showed great courage. Can't really blame anyone here. This is what I don't mind. Lose, but not without a fight.
I am sorry, but the fight seemed to only stem from 4 people. Ideally, we should never have been in this position. The target was 192 ,not 592 that our batsmen got bowled over earlier than expected. As I explain below, the batsmen should have been able to overhaul the rather measly target. Actually, this is a loss that we fans should mind. India had a golden opportunity but they squandered it.
I don't mind losing in such matches.

At the end of the day a good spectacle for test match cricket.
I disagree- this isa match we should have won. England had been outplayed and challenged throughout. The inability to chase shows the lack of batting depth and mental application from our batsmen. Karun, Gill, Pant, NKR ,Washington should have been able to get us to the target. It wasn't unsurmountable. India's erratic batting made England win, not Stokes' captaincy or brilliant bowling from them.
Shoaib Bashir is out of the series. It raises the interesting question of whether they'll shoehorn Jacob Bethell in, or just smash the button marked "Jack Leach"
Get in Moeen Ali!

Retired! I would probably give Rehan a game here or bring in Jafer Chohan. India has been susceptible to spin bowling/new bowlers over the past few years. Might be a good idea here.

As I understand it, he's a middling recreational player.

I always got the impression that England's problem with him was that if he looks funny at the wrong item of food at lunch on Day One, he won't leave the toilet again until late on Day Five.

They overheard him talking about the 18th century cottage he lives in, and got spooked hearing about a low ceiling.

I thought I had bought tickets for day 1 at the Oval, only to discover just before the test that I actually had tickets for day 1 at Lords. Would have been fine except I’m not currently in the country

Luckily managed to sell the Lords tickets and get Oval ones after all. Can’t wait, shaping up as a great series, apart from the ball nonsense.

Why. Why does have to be him?

I did have him second on my list of probable candidates I thought England would spring for but it doesn’t make it any less painful that a man I’ve campaigned so hard against is back.

It was a fight nonetheless. Doesn't matter if it was from 1 player or 11. I was delighted to see Bumrah and Siraj put such a heavy price on their wicket. The loss hurts no doubt, but the win didn't come easy for the opposition.

Jadeja had a golden opportunity to redeem himself and while he couldn't put us over the line, you cant but applaud his contribution with the tail - something that Washington Sundar should learn from.

In all the 3 Tests so far, India did have the upper hand over England on many occasions, so that's an encouraging sign.

Old Trafford up next- given the injuries to the bowling unit, who comes in for whom? And can India now afford to rest Bumrah, with the series on line? Considering the amount of rest he has gotten, I would have him play all 5 games in an important series like this. I understand we have added Kambhoj to the squad, but I know very little of him to pass any judgement.

As for the batting, Nair needs to go. 30s-40s isnt helping India. He might be 'talented' but we cannot rely on mere words, especially when we are trailing and there aren't many seniors around. I also feel, Gambhir needs to give a proper dressing down to Jaiswal for playing stupid shots all through. In his limited career, he has shown he is a flat track bully and that's all. Might be better to consider someone else in his stead if the erratic shot making continues.

In crunch situations like these, potential must translate into performance—there’s no room for reckless talent or unearned spots. It's time for accountability.
