England v India 1st ODI

England 200/4 beat India 196 by 6 wickets

India continued to be aggressive but they found themselves in big trouble
when both Gautam Gambhir and Rahul Dravid were dismissed with the score
on 45. First Gambhir was run out thanks to a direct throw from Ian Bell for 6
and then Dravid was given out lbw to Sidebottom. Replays showed that the
ball seemed to be missing the leg stump but umpire Benson raised the finger.

MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh started to rebuild taking a slightly more cautious
approach. But after a run a ball 28 from Dhoni things took another turn for
the worst. A run out was again the cause of dismissal, this time Kevin Pietersen
at mid wicket managed to get the ball to Prior quickly who took off the bails
with Dhoni an inch short of the mark. Harbhajan Singh lasted 3 balls before
he also departed for one, caught behind by Prior off the bowling of
Mascarenhas.

Yuvraj Singh and Irfan Pathan started to take their time and slowly build a
competitive total for their side. Yuvraj Singh reached his fifty from 72 balls
with 5 fours, but was dismissed 2 balls later by captain Paul Collingwood.
After breaking the partnership of 57 between Pathan and Singh, England
managed to dismiss the other set batsmen, Pathan, 3 runs later. Sidebottom
beating Pathan past the outside edge and hitting the off stump half way up.
Ajit Agarkar hit a 22 ball 29 to help India up to 196, Collingwood trapping
him lbw and another run out finishing off the innings.

England needed 197 to win at 3.94 runs per over. Alastair Cook and Matt
Prior hit a steady opening partnership of 53 before both were dismissed in
quick time. Pathan the man to take the wickets, first of all Prior bowled for 24
and then Cook lbw for 27.

This brought Kevin Pietersen and Ian Bell together needing to put on a good
partnership to steady the innings and keep England on track for victory. They
did just that with a partnership of 97 for the 3rd wicket, Pietersen hitting
55 of those before he edged to Dhoni from the bowling of RP Singh. Ian Bell
was the last man to be dismissed, recording the 4th run out of the day. He
made 44 just 6 short of a deserved half century but his innings had made
sure that England only needed a few runs an over to win. Owais Shah (25*)
and Paul Collingwood (12*) saw England home with plenty of overs to go.

England take the lead in the 1st ODI of the series. The next match takes
place at Bristol on the 24th.

Today five teams named their 15-man squads for the upcoming T20 World
Championships in South Africa. India, England, Sri Lanka, West Indies and the
host South Africa all announced their squads today. Over the next two days
the other seven teams will announce their squads for the tournament that
starts next month.

England have named a specialist Twenty20 squad including some big names
from the domestic stage. Darren Maddy, Chris Schofield and Jeremy Snape
are among those call-ups. Andrew Strauss, Alastair Cook and Ian Bell all miss
out.

India have left out their biggest names in order to look to the future. MS
Dhoni will take over from Rahul Dravid as captain after the ODI series with
England. India leave behind Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly
and Zaheer Khan to make way for new names such as Joginder Sharma,
Yusuf Pathan and Piyush Chawla.

South Africa go into the Championships as big contenders to win it. They will
take a mix of experience and youth, Jacques Kallis the biggest name to miss
out. The Morkel brothers look an exciting prospect as well as the two 22 year
olds Vernon Philander and Thandi Tshabalala. Graeme Smith and his men have
high expectations at home to go far in the competition, and so they will need
to be at their best to leave their fans feeling satisfied.

Sri Lanka are also big favourites for the title after making the final of the
World Cup earlier this year. Mahela Jayawardene leads his side with big names
such as Sanath Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara. The bowling attack looks
promising with the likes of Lasith Malinga, Mutiah Muralitharan, Chaminda Vaas
and Dilhara Fernando. Sri Lanka could be in for a real chance at winning the
competition.

The West Indies have under-performed in recent times, but the Twenty20
spirit is right up their street. Ramnaresh Sarwan will captain a side that has
nothing to lose and will go all guns blazing from the word go. Chris Gayle and
Shivnarine Chanderpaul will be crucial with the bat, whilst Dwayne Bravo,
Fidel Edwards and Daren Powell will need to be on song with the ball.

How they were out

With Zimbabwe in serious trouble at 111/5, the lower order helped lift them up
to a defendable target. Matsikenyeri hit 39 from 49 deliveries, and along with
Elton Chigumbura's 30 from 42 they made it to 192/7. Ntini then finished things
off, picking up both Matsikenyeri and Chigumbura, as well as Mupariwa and
Maruma. Pollock finished it all of dismissing the opposing captain, caught and
bowled, for 11 to leave Zimbabwe all out with 3 balls remaining on 197.

In reply Graeme Smith and Loots Bosman quickly reached past 50 without loss.
Smith was the first casualty of the innings, Chigumbura bowling him for a quick
50 from 51 balls. Goolam Bodi came and went for 9 after being trapped lbw
by spinner Prosper Utseya.

Bosman and AB de Villiers put on 44 together before Bosman fell 5 short of a
deserved half century. Masakadza took the wicket but that was the last
thing Zimbabwe fans got to shout about as AB de Villiers and Jean-Paul Duminy
finished the innings off in style. An unbeaten partnership of 62 meant that
South Africa cruised home with 7 wickets in hand and 8.5 overs remaining.
