England Announce Squad

Opening Partners - Andrew Strauss and Alistair Cook

England were at Lord's today to announce their squad for the Test series against Bangladesh.

Andrew Strauss will once again lead the team into a busy summer of cricket, and with company from Alistair Cook, his new vice-captain, Paul Collingwood and Kevin Pietersen, there will be no lack of leadership within the squad. The debated position of opening bowler no.2 has been settled for the time being with Graham Onions chosen ahead of Tim Bresnan, Steven Finn, Steve Harmison and Amjad Khan, while new-boy Ajmal Shahzad is welcomed into the Test Squad for the first time.

Ravi Bopara returns to the squad, but admits that he will have to improve if he wants to keep that place in the Test Side, because he knows that there is great talent coming up through the ranks, and knows that he is not the best of them.

There is still no place for Eoin Morgan, but when questioned about him, coach Andy Flower responded by saying that his time will come, and that the selectors know what he can do. The other new-boy in the squad is South-African born Craig Kieswetter, who could be the eventual replacement for Matt Prior, who remains in the squad.

Good strong squad for the English there. I'm happy to see Kieswetter is included and looking forward to see him in this series.

Some interesting picks there. Craig Kieswetter,Ajmal Shahzadand Ravi Bopara i didn't expected them to be in the side. Maybe Morgan should have been included but nonetheless overall squad looks strong. Lets see can Bangladesh put up a upset or not.

Close, But Not Close Enough

Kevin Pietersen on his way to a hundred

Graham Onions was once again England's hero as he hit the winning runs against Bangladesh today.

England, who were chasing 210 in their second innings, were left on 203/9 when Onions came to partner Swann at the crease. At that time, the match could have gone either way, but Onions blocked out the nerves, and smashed the match winning boundary.

Having won the toss, Andrew Strauss surprised people by electing to bowl first, on a wicket that looked more suitable for the batsmen. However, Anderson struck first ball, removing Kayes for a duck. After that however, England were made to work for their wickets, as Iqbal scored a half century, and Ahmed and Ashraful helped to keep the innings going. Eventually they fell, but Shakib al Hasan, who had already scored one century in this tour, set about scoring another one. He had company from Iqbal, Rahim and Mahmudullah, and brought up his century. The tail end faltered, and England tore through it thanks to Jimmy Anderson's 4/85 and Graeme Swann's 4/68.

England's chase didn't start well, Cook fell for 9, and Strauss fell for 20. Bopara and Bell, the two members of the squad who had been heavily criticised last season, needed to hit big scores. Bell failed, he too went for just 9, but Bopara, who was joined by Kevin Pietersen, began to score runs, and soon, they'd both scored 50s. Bopara was out on 68, but Pietersen continued, and although Collingwood could only make 22, Prior finished 86 not out. Pietersen's 100 came, a well-timed sweep to deep backward square leg allowed him to jog through a single and raise his bat. KP hasn't been in form recently, but this knock will be a welcome relief to everybody involved with the squad. Once again, the tail didn't perform, and the last few wickets feel cheaply, leaving England with a lead of 35.

A different story in the Bangladeshi second innings, this time, it was Kayes to score the 50, and Iqbal to go for nothing. However, Kayes was the only man to go beyond 50, and although most of the middle-order got in, none of them stuck around for long, even Shakib could only manage 18 before he was removed as part of another Anderson attack. Anderson finished with 5/74, and England bowled Bangladesh out for 244, meaning that with a day and a bit left of the match, England needed 210 to win. The pitch had deteriorated, and the batsmen knew it would be a tough challenge, but they believed they could do it.

Or did they, Strauss, Cook and Bopara all went for less than 10, Bopara for a duck. England were 15/3, and it suddenly looked as if Bangladesh were favourites for the match. The pitch was suiting the bowlers, and England would have to hope for somebody to inspire the rest of the team. However, nobody went to 50, Bell and Pietersen both looked comfortable in the 30s, but didn't get any further, would these contributions be enough, or would it need a big score from somebody. Soon, it was 130/6, and Bangladesh still looked like the favourites. However, Broad and Swann put on 35, and Swann and Anderson put on 26, combined, it was another 61 runs to the total, and now things were very close indeed, England were 203/9, needing 7 runs, whereas Bangladesh needed 1 wicket. Minds returned to Edgbaston in 2005, but was it now England's turn to fall short. No, it wasn't, and once again Graham Onions was the hero, him and Swann stayed there till the end, not giving in to nerves or pressure. England captain Andrew Strauss said that he was 'Jubilant' about the win, and 'Very Pleased' that Onions could put up another great performance with bat.

WT20 Squad Announced

114144.jpg

Paul Collingwood will lead England in the upcoming Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies.

Collingwood, who plays for the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL, is one of the few experienced members in a squad that is full of young faces. Kevin Pietersen will be the vice-captain, and both were at Lords to announce the squad today.

England are currently leading Bangladesh 1-0 in the 2-match Test series, with the second and final test starting on Thursday. However, today's announcement was all about the youngsters, but with only a few caps between them, it will be a great opportunity to make a name for themselves on the international scene.

The youngsters include Eoin Morgan, Craig Kieswetter, Luke Wright, Joe Denly, Dawid Malan, and Ajmal Shazad. Accompanied with the more experienced players including Collingwood, Pietersen, Prior, Broad and Swann, it is one of the most exciting England squads in recent times.

Coach Andy Flower said that it was a great opportunity for the young players to come into the squad, and that he couldn't wait to get the team out to the West Indies. Middlesex's Dawid Malan is one of the younger players in the squad, and after his big hitting for Middlesex last year, he is thrilled to be rewarded with the place.

'It is a huge achievement for me, it's what I've always wanted, and I can't wait to step out onto that field and know that I've got the three lions on my shirt.'

The full 15-man squad:

Paul Collingwood (C)
Kevin Pietersen (vc)
Joe Denly
Ravi Bopara
Owais Shah
Luke Wright
Dawid Malan
Craig Kieswetter
Matt Prior
Stuart Broad
Graeme Swann
James Anderson
Eoin Morgan
Ajmal Shahzad
Tim Bresnan

Dawad Malan's an interesting choice, but he seems to have proven himself in the twenty20 format so hopefully he does well.

Stuart Broad leads the applause

England have completed a 2-0 series whitewash against Bangladesh today.

After taking the lead in the series in a nervy finish in Lord's, but this win at Edgbaston was a lot more straightforward.

England captain Andrew Strauss won the toss and elected to bat first on a pitch that looked like it could produce another even match. However, Bangladesh took the wicket of Strauss for just 4 runs, and Cook could only make 20 before he too was bowled. Then the Middle-order took over, with Bell, Pietersen, Collingwood and Prior all making great contributions to bring the score up past 200. But although Prior was still scoring runs, the rest of the team went through a typical mini-collapse, and England collapsed to 367 all out when 400 was definitely achievable.

Almost every Bangladeshi made a steady start to their individual innings, but all apart from Naeem Islam failed to turn that start into a good contribution. Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, therefore not allowing any partnership to grow and for the runs to flow a bit more. However, the lower-order batted well to raise Bangladesh from the dead at 61/5 to 213 all out. Mohammad Ashraful was unlucky to be run-out on 31 after a magnificent direct-hit from Jimmy Anderson, who was fielding at point at the time. The captain, Shakib, seemed to drop out of form as he was bowled by Anderson for just 1. Mahmudullah, the all-round spinner in the side made 26, but credit has to go to Naeem Islam, his 51 made sure that Bangladesh didn't crumble, and carried them through to over 250.

With time now short, and the match in it's fourth day, England needed a lead, and they needed it fast. Strauss once again failed to score big, only managing 16 this time. And Bell also struggled, only making 11 before returning to the pavillion. However, Cook made a nice 50, and Pietersen was not out on 78, when Strauss called him and Collingwood in with the score at 202/3. Meaning that England had a lead of 357 to bowl at.

England tore through Bangladesh, bowling them out for 124 after just under an hours play on the fifth day. However, Bangladesh looked steady at 66/3, but it was the lower-order who this time collapsed, with Broad and Swann taking the wickets needed to secure the victory.
