Does it need to be foldable?

I'd seriously consider looking at table specialists in your area for a 6-ft table, if you want a decent one. Even if all you do is ask for their advice.

Yes, 6ft is small for a snooker table, but you need a bloody big house to fit a full size one in, with space around it to play.

I had a 6footer when I was a kid, got it second hand. That way got a better one than a crappy Argos cheapie. Let's face it people who have snooker tables generally look after them so second hand is a decent buy.

I have a friend who has the folding 6ft table from argos.

I have played on it a few times but it is wierd as the cues are slightly the wrong size for the table. and the table can get damaged very easily and woble.

I would recommend it if you want to use it evey now and then, not hardcore use.

You can buy some on ebay and other places for as cheap as £79. Argos once had a sale as cheap as £60 for one of these.

So you've got two options:

2nd hand table, save yourself a ton of money, find one in good condition.
Buy a 6footer from a table maker, you'll spend more, but it will be the best you can buy.

@Sureshot: No, it doesn't have to be foldable.

@Sohum: No, six foot isn't small to have a very good game of snooker. Most people can't go with twelve footers (you probably need reinforced floor of some sort for them as well; they're so big and heavy, they are bought in piece by piece and assembled on site!) I have played on a six foot table before and they're great fun! Anything less than 6ft is probably going to be a bit small for an adult to have fun with (5ft isn't too bad). The main differences between a 6ft and a toy like a 4ft is the cushion quality and the size of the balls relative to the cue tip. The balls that come with a 4ft table are far too small to impart spin, especially backspin, but 6ft tables' balls can generate a ton of spin, I speak from experience! They're also much heavier than 4ft ones and have a much more satisfying 'kiss' sound!

Also, I am looking for one with ball runners, as they don't break after a certain amount of time, unlike net pockets, especially if they're brass ones!

I am currently leaning towards this one:

6ftJaguarTmide_new.jpg

as it is a Riley and looks so damn nice! Price is £229, but if I hear good things about this one:

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3353479/Trail/searchtext>SNOOKER+TABLE.htm

then I'll go with that one, as getting it from Argos will be far more convenient than having to send off for one (and as I've said before, I'm none too keen about high price internet transactions). You can hardly call £200 a crap cheapie form Argos, can you? Surely for that price you'd get a decent table? I just wish it said 'Riley or BCE' on it, that's a guarantee of quality when you get above a 5ft table. I also had a 6ft table when I was a kid, it was from Argos and cost around £120. Reasonably cheap, but it was one hell of a table!

Edit: I don't mind if the cues are small for the table; I'll be buying shorter cues anyway, as it's the only way the table can go in the room I have in mind. The cues, although shorter, have full size tips (within 1mm) and are basically a scaled down version of a professional full size cue. I'm fairly short myself, so I could use short cues (never thought I'd have a reason to be thankful about my height!!) I'm around 5.6.

Once again, thanks for your help.

Yeps, I've been on to a specialist, they can offer me a six foot table with almost professional standard cushions and cloth for £325, but I don't really want to spend much more than £200. The £220 Riley one would be pushing it as it is.

What's annoying is there are hardly any stores that seem to have these 6ft tables on display, so you can test them out. Does anyone know of stores in London that display 6ft tables? A local JJB to me had some out a while back and they looked good, but naturally, they've now gone and closed down! In fact, I've heard that all the JJBs in London are closing, which is a great shame. I asked Argos and they said they have a showroom in....Cardiff. A fat lot of use that is! I mean, you'd expect a major store like Argos to have at least one showroom in London as well, since that's the Capital city?

By the way, guys, sorry for the triple post spam-fest, it wasn't getting through, so I kept sending it. Didn't think it would actually appear on the forum eventually... :o

I have a snooker table in my room, not sure if it's 6ft, but I would imagine it is. Used to play it a lot, and I am pretty darn good at snooker. Don't use it at all nowadays really, too much junk on top of it. Shame really, love to play, and I think I should've taken it up as a young kid and try and mae it pro. Ahh well, everyone has regrets.

So yeh, I have one. Oh yeah, and mine cost like ?80 from Argos about 6 or 7 years ago :p

I hear you mate. Same here, I was really good when I was young, but I never took it into my head to ask my parents if they could get me a snooker coach.

As well as that though, you need daily access to a 12 ft table, going down the club a couple of times a week to play a few frames with mates isn't practice. You need to use actual practice exercises, like the one where you line the reds up and try to pot them one by one, not just play frame after frame. I could've definitely made pro. Oh well, wasn't to be...

It's confusing, because the names on those Argos tables could just be 'names', or they could be proper snooker manufactures. I haven't heard of either of those, although there's another table there, by Ambassador, I think they are a snooker/pool specialist. It's 6ft 8in (or something like that), so I wouldn't be able to accommodate that! Shame, it looks nice and getting it from Argos would be far more convenient for me.

Link, if anyone's interested, or after a table like I am:

I also allowed my old table to be used for putting things on. That is not happening this time, I'm buying a cover for it and taking good care of this one!

It seems you want a pretty nice one, which is fair enough seeing as your willing to keep it tidy and play often. I remember when one of my mates ripped the cloth. I was not happy. In fact I think the rip is still there. Maybe it's time to crack it out again and clear the stuff away. Me and my step dad constantly played each other in best of 9 matches over a few weeks, myself, of course, winning most of the time. It's also great to play on your own when bored. Much better than deciding to watch crappy tele or just playing a game on Fifa for the sake of it.

It's one thing I'm definitely going to go and watch in a few years time, the World Snooker Championships in Sheffield. Would love to just spend a few days watching top class players live.

Hell yeah, I'd be spitting mad if someone ripped the cloth on my old 6ft, let alone the one I'm looking at now!! Do you reckon if I'm buying a quality make (Riley/BCE) and spending over £200 on it, I should be getting something I'll be very pleased with? And I know what you mean about it being a great thing to do when you're bored. I've missed having a table in my room, so I can't wait to get this one. Using shorter cues, it's just about going to be ok (and have enough space to move around the room).

Edit: Is it my imagination, or do the balls on this one:

6ftJaguarTmide_new.jpg

look a bit big in proportion to the pockets, as opposed to this one?

6ftJaguarmide_new.jpg

They're both Riley 6ft tables. The second one would blend in with my furniture better, but the first one (according to the guy I emailed there) comes with 'tournament rubbers'. I'm trying to find out if they're both the same in performance and that the difference is only in the look of the table.

Yes, the balls on the first table are huge compared to the ones on the second. I would rather go for good quality at a cheaper price, rather than excellent quality at a lot more. It's obviously your choice, though.
