Well after England set President's XI a rather modest score to chase down, the openers, Uthappa and Dhawan strode out confidently, knowing that a chance to cause a massive shock was within their grasp. Uthappa is pushing for a place in the India 11 and so will desperately be wanting to impress. Dhawan is another solid batsman who has plenty of runs to his name.
Things did not start well for England with Sidebottom bowling 4 wides!!! You got the feeling it was the Harmison, Ashes scenario all over again, as over the next 3 overs, Sidebottom went for 42 runs!!! Luckily for England, Jimmy Anderson at the other end was keeping it a bit tighter, but President's XI had just made the perfect start. Collingwood quickly withdrew Sidebottom out of the attack with a quick pat on the back. Sidey was looking shell-shocked. Perhaps his beautiful swing bowling has lost it's charm with his hair being cut?
Sidebottom was replaced with Plunkett who had a big grin on his face, looking like he was determined to shine and prove he deserves to be in the England starting XI. However it appeared Sidebottom's bad luck had now moved on to Plunkett. He had a horrific first over with 16 runs being scored! England were all over the place and it just looked like the England bowlers had no idea. Thankfully however, England had a lone warrior. Jimmy Anderson. The man who has proven over the past year, how good a seam bowler he really is. With both batsmen looking in fine touch, Anderson finally got the breakthrough when he bowled Dhawan with a perfect yorker for 27. It had clipped of his pads, but it was a very good delivery. Anderson was mobbed by his team-mates. Was this the breakthrough, England desperately needed?
However this now meant Mongia the skipper was at the crease. This wicket would be crucial, if England were going to have any chance of winning this match. However, both Mongia and Uthappa looked in excellent touch, with Plunkett now being hit all over the ground. He was once again repalced after 3 overs, with figures not as bad as Sidebottom's but still very poor. Collingwood in desperation brought himself into that attack, to lead by example.
Anderson managed to soon pick up the wicket of Mongia. A full dleivery it seamed slightly towards the batsman and sent his off-peg cartwheeling backwards. However it was now looking too little too late with the the score 98/2 and President's XI only requiring 60 more runs. Apart from Anderson, the English seam attack had been a big let down.
Robin Uthappa, had looked in fine touch from the first over. When he struck Collingwood for a 4 and brought up his 50, he rightly deserved the applause from the crowd and England players alike. It had been a fine knock and extremely quick coming off just 35 balls. It had contained seven 4s and three 6s. He had really taken the attack to the England bowlers and just swatted them away as if they were annoying flies. He had played some classy strokes and it should be noted that some of the Indian selectors were in the crowd, busily noting something down, his name perhaps?
Unfortunately, for Uthappa, he was not able to take his side home. He advanced down the wicket to Collingwood and just played a little push shot back over his head. It looked like a certain 4, however Ian Bell came running in and hurled himself at the ball. To be honest, no one thought he would hang on to it, however as he slid along the ground his hands were still triumphantly clutching the ball. Even though the match was effectively over, Bell was still hugged and danced around with some of his team-mates. It was one of the best catches seen in India for a long time.
President's XI now had a mini-collapse as Bangar came and went for a golden duck. This now meant Collingwood was on a hat-trick!!! However it was slightly ruined by him bowling a no-ball the very next delivery. This left Raina and Rao to take President's XI home with ease. Raina had also looked in very fine touch, but the star of the show had been Uthappa, with his cameo knock. The England players were just standing around, looking shocked as it sunk in they had been beaten, in a match the bookies would not even give odds on Cook especially looked gutted when he realised his 50 had been for nothing. Pietersen just sat on the ground holding his head. It had only been a warm-up match but you could see the England team were deply affected.
Plunkett and Sidebottom had been a big let down for England. Of their combined 6 overs, they had let 75 runs be scored, just under half the runs required!!! For Sidebottom there was probably going to be another day as he had a lot of previous wickets to back up why he is such a quality bowler. For Plunkett however things did not look good. He had been a bit of a wild-card being selected and had not back up his good county form with a good performance here. Anderson had brought a lot of control to the match and must be a certainty for the first 20/20. Collingwood and Pietersen really impressed with the ball. The fact that Pietersen did so well showed how important spin is on this pitch. Overall it was a very poor performance by England.
Coming up is, "Hit for Six!" and the post-match presentation. Stay tuned!
