Day 1
The second test began once again with a packed stadium at the Sydney Cricket Ground, with a greedy crowd expecting another exciting test after the humdingers in years gone past.
Mohammed Yousuf once again called correctly with tails, and sent the Aussies into the field.
The opening bowlers were unable to strike, and the opening batsman cruised to 86 before Covvy Hilfenhaus removed Taufeeq Umar. Hilfenhaus then struck immediately after lunch to remove Younis Khan for 15. The skipper then fell for a duck, and the Tasmanian swing bowler had three. Nasir Jamshed and Khurram Manzoor then combined for a 188 run stand which saw them to the new ball before Hilfenhaus removed Jamshed for a brilliant 149.
Hilfenhaus then proceeded to force Manzoor to retire hurt three balls before stumps, a nasty short ball flooring the batsman after his second hundred on tour. Binnu then struck next over to remove Kamran Akmal and the tourists when to stumps at 5/362.
Day 2
Hilfenhaus struck an hour into the first session to bring up his five for, removing Misbah ul-Haq for 44. Shreyas then had Arafat and Gul caught behind in the space of three balls and Johnson returned to complete the innings with Afridi caught at mid-off by Harishan, the tourists finishing on 428.
Wickets fell at regular intervals for the Australians. The openers combined for 58 before Harishan was struck in front by Arafat. Gray was then the casualty to an outstanding catch from the substitute fielder, out for 37 and Pickering mimicked his score after the Australia captain was subjected to a controversial lbw appeal, which was deemed in favour of the bowler.
Day 3
The hosts struggled to string together partnerships, and at 5/149 it seems as though they were headed for a series deafeat. Tom Baker and Troy Lerana then combined for a 170 run stand, which was halted when Baker was forced to retire hurt on 85.
Lerana then combined with the tail to produce 112 runs for the seventh wicket and see the Australians to 9/468, before a stunning catch at third man brought an end to Lerana’s 189, one of the greatest innings of all time.
With two overs to face before stumps the Pakistani batsmen should have had no problem. However Shreyas ran in to bowl a hostile first over which saw Umar out for a duck off just the second ball.
Day Four
The following morning the tourists add just 14 runs before Khan was out for 8 to Shreyas. At 3/69 it seemed the game was over but a 190 run stand between Jamshed and Misbah brought the Pakistanis back into the game. Jamshed brought up his second hundred of the game and Misbah fell short of his own ton.
Hilfenhaus then bowled a hostile spell to remove the tail before any damage was done, and the tourists were all out for 297, the swing bowler with nine in the game.
With an over to go before stumps the Australian openers stole 8 runs, leaving them exactly 250 to make on the final day
Day Five
Harishan was quickly out six, before Gray and Pickering combined for 76 runs. Gray proceeded to make runs with the middle order and was unlucky to fall short of his hundred, with 85 in his second innings on his home ground, having scored 37 in the first.
Wickets fell quickly to give the Aussies a scare, but Lerana, Binnu and Johnson combined to make easy work of the chase and the Australians were home with four wickets to spare.
