Australia: Rebuilding [ICC2005]

The end of the 2016/17 season has come, and the beginning of 17/18 is upon us. Australia sit, slumped, at fifth on the LG Test Rankings and a lowly eighth in the One Day International rankings. While their batting is among the best in the world, the top four all Australian, and a further two in the top ten, only one bowler sits in the top forty, slow left armer Tony Burley at 32. With no prospects coming through, will it be a long season ahead? Only time will tell.

The fixtures are as follows.
Australia's Tour of England
Twenty20 Cup v. England

NatWest Series
England v. India v. Australia

The Ashes
Holders: England
Five Test Matches

Zimbabwe in Australia

Last Winner: Australia
Two Test Matches

South Africa in Australia
Holders: Australia
Pollock-Ponting Championship
Five Test Matches

Carlton Draught Series
Holders: Australia (d. Pakistan 2-1)
Australia v. South Africa v. Zimbabwe

Australia in South Africa
Pollock-Ponting Championship
Three Test Series

Wessels One Day Trophy
Holders: Australia
Five One Day Internationals

So a big year ahead, margainly easier than the two subcontinent tours last year.

Player profiles coming up next.

Making his international debut at just 24, two year after his first FC ton, was given his chance in the second test against New Zealand, due to injuries to other openers Justin Langer and Matthew Hayden. As Hayden's move down the order, Langer's retirement and Phil Jaques' lack of form, Baldwin was joined by Queensland team mate Peter Mandell. The duo formed a formidable opening partnership, rivalling that of the Langer/Hayden and Greenidge/Haynes partnerships. Two stands of 400+ (once against Zimbabwe and once against England) saw them move away as the best partnership in the world.

In a 497 runs partnership with Mandell against Zimbabwe, Baldwin smashed 345 before being bowled, his highest FC score. Now as captain, his form has slumped a bit with an average dropping by four over the last few years, but his bowling improving immensely, often used as a fifth bowler. Not too surprising, his form slump happened when batting at four, but due to an injury to Simon Casey, he has found touch at the top of the order once again.

The big Queenslander made his debut in a dead rubber against South Africa in the year he made his FC debut, scoring 1000 runs in that year alone. Since then he hasn't looked back, forming a formidable opening stand with Garry Baldwin. After a slump in the 2015 season, Mandell returned in grand style with a 203 against the best bowling attack in the world, Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka. Mandell, now in his late years, will hope to keep his great record on track as he moves toward 10 000 test runs.

In an era where left arm spin is not a threat, Burley set to change that with his big turning left arm leg spin. Serving under the coaching of fellow Victorian Shane Warne, Burley made his FC, and test debut in 2006. With 70 wickets in his first year, Burley set to work on his one day game, at the detriment of test cricket. Now firming as the best left arm spinner in history, at just 28 and 397 test wickets, Burley looks certain to spin his way to greater things. A best of 8-52 against the world's best batting line up, Pakistan, and a ten wicket hall against the Indians on their own turf, has earned him much respect among those in the sub continent.

That Garry Baldwin looks a lot like my good mate Mike Edwards (looked at the link :p).

Looks good mate, what program will you be using, out of curiosity? Don't think I can see it mentioned.

Thrust into cricket for a one off test in his first year of FC cricket on the back of three centuries for New South Wales. After failing, the big hitting New South Welshman had to wait two years to get his chance again, with a much more technically correct game, with less 'get out' shots. Since then, Stubbs has switched between the two modes, equally as devistating and entertaining to watch. With an almost Lara-esque technique of moving in front of his stumps, Stubbs notched up a glorious 241 against India, which signalled his break out knock. Yet to score a one day ton, but has real potential to do so.

'Overweight, useless in the field, use less with the ball.' They were the words from former selector Trevor Hohns before Merv Hughes came into control and selected him as an opener for the injured Mandell, paying off immediately. Despite and average of 60, a lazy technique saw Casey fail in the middle order in his early career, not passing 100 for fifteen tests. Since then, he has averaged in excess of fifty, brilliant in a two year stint as opening batsman before moving back down to five with effective results. In the best shape of his life, the 32 year old looks odds on to keep on scoring runs with a more determined technique.

After averaging over 70 in FC cricket, Hanger was immediately touted as the next big Australian opener. It wasn't to be for eight tests, as he averaged in the low twenties. However, a big 205* against the Indians quickly changed that batting at four, as he cemented his spot, and future in the test side. Run out for a heart breaking 99 in a Carlton Draught Final, looks determined to keep on improving. Lively fieldsman aswell.

After a booming start with a ton on debut, Adam quickly shot back down to Earth with a pair in his second test, eventually making way for Tasmanian all rounder Beau Phelps. Recently found his way back into the team after an injury to all rounder Shane Watson, and after solid tours of Sri Lanka and Pakistan, has the number six spot sewn up. Good medium pacer aswell, despite an average of 90.17.

'So much potential, but so little delivered' will be the line said when Watson finally hangs up the spikes. Despite a solid looking record of an average of mid 30s with bat and ball in test cricket, Watson could have easily done a lot more than that. His accurate fast mediums worked well in the one day arena, but were taken to all parts in test cricket. 432 test wickets, a retirement may be on the cards when the 500 comes up, to possibly become the fifth Australian to do it, after Warne, Lee, Gillespie and McGrath.

Originally born in South Africa, the nineteen year old averaged in the sixties for no selection. Eventually heading off to Australia at the age of 19, he waited four years with an average in the fifties for South Australia before getting the nod for Australia. Hasn't played a lot so far, but a glorious ton against the West Indies in the Carlton Draught Series shows good signs for the future.

After just three FC matches for Tasmania, the lively all rounder was thrust into the tests side, much to the disgust of the public. But in test match number two, his critics were silenced as he lead the Australians to a decisive win against India, chasing above 300. On a fully deteriorated pitch, a top order collapse saw his team at 5-63, Phelps leading them home with a six hour century, to secure the Border-Gavaskar trophy. Known for his bowling more than his batting, if he can keep his FC and List A form up with the ball, and transfer it to international cricket, we may have our next Ian Botham.

Thrust into the limelight in the 2010 World Cup due to an out of form and old Adam Gilchrist, Baldwin immediately produced results with a fifty on debut. Now a solid lower order batsman, his second team average of 60 shows he has a lot of potential. A wonderful 206, albeit against Zimbabwe, proved to the world just how good he can be. Just the one List A ton shows he needs to work on his one day game, but one of the better glovemen in the world, handling the big turning Tony Burley and accurate Garry Baldwin to 18 test stumpings and a bundle of catches. Just 26 now, should play 300 one dayers, barring a better youngster coming through.

Touted as one of the best fast bowling prospects in the country as a twenty year old, five years on Shaun Watts has yet to live up to his hype. Despite some wonderful performances in the international arena at times, his test form has seen him in and out of the side. Solid one day international form has gained him much respect from Waqar Younis, who described him as 'the best young one day player in the world.' His NAB Cup One Day form has proven this.

The strong medium pacer has not featured regularly in the team so far, however convincing his form for South Australia has been. An average test debut and some poor one day internationals has put him further back in the selectors minds, but a good start in a tour of England may see him feature in their plans once again.

Now winding up his career, Cameron White will end with a fairly successful career in test matches, and a more than handy one day career. 53 tests and 159 one dayers is the sign of a great career, and despite his lack of batting performance, his handy wrist spin got Australia out of many a situation throught his career. Along with Garry Baldwin, he was Australia's partnership breaking, destroying India with 6-42 on a Mumbai turner. May feature throughout the summer, but probably only in the one day game or at the SCG.

The Eagle has it all. Youth. Good pace. Good swing. A good action. And a great name. Despite a short career so far, the 24 year old West Australian looks certain to feature in the Aussie bowling ranks in the near future. A 4-54 against best in the world, Pakistan proved this to be correct.

Debuting for Australia at just 19, Corey Donald was smashed too all parts by the England batting line up in the NatWest Series. He didn't get another game for a year and a half, before returning in grand style with 3 wickets and then a four for six against the Sri Lankans in two games. Needs to work on consistancy, otherwise will find his spot on the outer once again.

Chris Butt, towering in at 198cm, was picked out of the blue for an Ashes tour where he only played one tour match, and averging 40 with the ball in FC cricket before this. Destined to be a one day player, and picked on just sheer pace alone, Butt will feature heavily in Australia's attempt at the NatWest Series, and also the defence of the Carlton Draught Series Trophy. A wonderful 4-49 in the CD Final against Pakistan (Shane Watson took his first five for) saw Butt come into the twelve for the three tests v. New Zealand. Hasn't played a test yet, but will hope to pull on the baggy green this season.

NatWest Series Sqauds announced

All three teams participating in this years NatWest Series today released their respective squads of eighteen. No new faces appear on the Australian squad, though Phil Jacques narrowly retains his spot after a fairly impressive one day season last year.

England bring in two new faces, Warwickshire pair, 29 year old keeper Nicholas Payne and 24 year old seamer Richard Reid. Payne averages 34 with the bat in FC cricket and 25 in List A matches, and an impressive start to the season sees him get the nod ahead of embattled Gloucs keeper Tony Guiness (averages just 19 in test cricket). Young Reid averages just 18 with the ball in List A matches and a healthy 25 in FC cricket aswell.

India bring in three new faces, 25 year old opener Gagandeep Sapru, 19 year old batsman Chris Gandhi and 19 year old seamer Hemang Seth. All are doubtful to get a start in any international games, but may play tour games. Captain Virender Sehwag may be unavailable for the first warm up game.

Baldwin expects NatWest win

Despite coming up against the best one day team in the world, and England who sit two places above eighth placed Australia on the LG rankings, Australian captain Garry Baldwin today said he expects Australia to win the series.

'I think we have a batting lineup powerful enough to score two hundred and sixty to three hundred every game. Our bowling has been weak in the past, but I believe we look a lot stronger in that department thanks to a lot of training and the New Zealand tour.' Baldwin said today after the Australians first training.

'I'd expect nothing less than a win. We have a side capable of beating the opposition, and certainly have the determination. We'll use the Twenty20 match and the warm up against Leicstershire to try a few of the young guys, but in the one dayers it will be our first eleven. We won't be resting players unless they really need one. The Ashes are important, but so is getting our ranking up to where we should be.

'Both teams are class, but I believe we have the firepower to match it.'

Australia face Leistershire in a one day warm up this Friday, before facing England in a Twenty20 match. Australia have never been beaten in a Twenty20 match.

Big games ahead.

Aussies and Indians breese through warm ups

Both Australia and India have started their one day campaigns on a bright note, crushing their opposition by 6 wickets and 177 runs respectively.

Centuries to opener Kumar Singh (102) and number three Sanath Arothe (104*) saw the Indians destroy a lacklustre Derbys bowling attack. The other two batsman out were Sharma for 43 and 19 year old Gandhi for a duck. Aavishkar Salvi was the pick of the bowlers with 4/29.

A strong 79 run opening stand between Mal Currie and Robert Clarkson was the only high point for Derbyshire against an inexperienced Australian lineup. The Aussie attack was lead by three wickets to fast bowler Chris Butt, and two to Roryl Ebert as the Aussies cruised through the rest of the lineup. A disappointing seven to both Phil Jaques and Jeff Hanger were the only sour notes on the Aussie card, young opener Mike Terblanche scoring 68 off 76, while captain Garry Baldwin hit 74 not out off 79. All rounder Beau Phelps also hit 42 runs off as many balls.

The Australians will play England in a Twenty20 match in two days time.

Not even rampant Baldwins can save dismal top order

Australia fell to its first Twenty20 Cup loss since its inception, a 2 wicket loss at the hands of the English. Despite the two Baldwins posting 60s, the three ducks and a further two scores sub ten was too much for the Aussies to rise from. Things looked bad as opener Peter Mandell well first ball of the innings, followed by Simon Casey the second ball of the next over, Mike Terblanche the forth ball and then Beau Phelps the third ball of the third over. 4/15 was too much to come back from, but wonderful half centuries from Garry and Chris Baldwin got them over the 150 mark.

Despite being at 4/42, the England cruised to victory with an over to spare, led by a 41 from ITwenty20 debutant Nicholas Payne. It was enough to see them over the line, in addition to a 29 run stand for the ninth wicket.

Hey, just a quick question guys. The font that the scorecard is done in, what is it called?

Great story, hope the Baldwins get a bit of support for the real stuff, want to see the Poms smashed (but not smashed post-series like what happened this year)

Aussies crush hapless Somerset

It was nothing but slogging practice for the Australian middle order after the nervy start from Baldwin and stand in captain Peter Mandell. Mandell and Baldwin both hit half centuries, but the real excitement came from Beau Phelps and James Adam both hitting scores in the eighties in fifty or so balls.

Despite defiant knocks from Plumber and Walley, Somerset waved the white flag, only going after Cameron White as they fell like dominoes to the other three. Tony Burley weaving his magic with four wickets.
