Chill out man. Thats my opinion. Doesn't have to mean its right. I just don't think Ponting is as good a batsman nor will ever be as good as Sachin, Dravid, Lara or Kallis.

Kallis only ever plays with one thing in his mind, and thats to protect his average, he is the most selfish player in world cricket, and the most over rated.

To me probably Tendalker is the best batsman in the world, his stats tell it all.
Next I would say Ponting and then Lara, this is all pretty much going on stats and a few other things.

Lara makes some huge scores, but when he don't he gets out for less than 10 runs to often for my liking, Tendulker and Ponting are not like this, if they don't score a 50 or 100 or even more they atleast scratch around the crease for a 30 or so.

And as far as Inzamam-ul-Haq goes well, he has skill but to me you can not put a player in the class as Lara, Tendulker and Ponting if he can't run between the wickets, you have to look at all aspects of the game in order to judge a Batsman.

Kallis protects his average and has lost just as many tests as he has won for South Africa, and even for the World XI, he could of chased those runs down but decided to try protect his average.

I am not judging Ponting on his Captaincy here either, just as a Batsman. As a Captain I would of preferred Gilchrist but hey, all to late now.

I would also throw Dravid up there in with those top batsman, Very good batsman and very sound.

I guess you could say his pull shots resemble slogging, but he hits the middle of the bat so damn easy, that it's clearly more timing than brute force (let's face it, he's not much bigger than Tendulkar anyway). Perhaps his off side shots lack precision from time to time, I know it doesn't take much to get him flashing at short balls, but again, it takes good timing moreso than power to place the ball behind point and at worst, maybe good awareness of the top edge of your bat.

However, his straight drives are sublime, almost anything onside is superbly directed and he's far from being the worst practicioner of the cover drive. He rarely lofts these shots and let's face it, he's hardly one renowned for six hitting.

I suppose then, you could be indicating that he has a slogger's mentality, that he goes after balls that he should or could leave. Well common sense for most is to leave or defend all the balls that you fear you will get out to, but clearly the statistics show that if he is disagreeing with common sense, common sense must be wrong. Perhaps if he was more tame, he would be near unbeatable. Why bother, though? As he is, he's one of the best batsmen in the world today, an exciting player to watch and a match winner.

Perfectly sumed up there, His strengths are those shots and if the bowlers put the ball there he will try to hit for four.. another century to punter just then good work:), Also Inzi has 24 centuries from 105 matches i think, Haydos got 24 from 78, Inzi isn't even close to be the worlds best batsman

Ponting scored a hundred again today, as the rest of the team collapsed. This is not the first time Ponting has played a lone hand.

Its time we recognise and appreciate the amazing consistency Ponting has been showing over the past few years.

And amazing luck. Last test he was caught of wrongly called no-ball. This test he was dropped by Nel. You would expect a guy with that much luck to go on and get big scores consistently.

It took a young boy named Sachin Tendulkar 9 test matches to rack up his first century. He now has 35 centuries. From 126 matches. Your statistic is, hence, quite useless.

Many could say the same about any defensive player, Atherton, Hussain, etc.

Yes, but he took advantage of that like good batsman do.
All batsman have luck.

No way, Atherton and Hussain did still turn it on when it was defeintly needed, Kallis hardly ever does.

That is not true. Kallis does hold the record for the fastest 50 in test cricket.

Remeber that test Match against Zimabawe? I think 500 scored in a day or something. He blazed a amazing 100. Graeme Cremer went for over 80 in 8 overs. Thats not turning it on?

Maybe, but if he holds together the RSA team and has averaged about 70 over the last 2 years the fans and selectors won't be bothered.
