This argument is pointless. We all have different opinions on who the best batsman is and no one I don't think is going to be convinced to change their minds.

They are all fantastic.

Remeber that test Match against Zimabawe? I think 500 scored in a day or something. He blazed a amazing 100. Graeme Cremer went for over 80 in 8 overs. Thats not turning it on?

Yeah it's turning it on but it was not needed, I mean like in the last innings RSA need 300 or so on the last day and he has several time just sat there and blocked ball after ball. Trying to Draw the match and get not out.

I'm sure Kallis' decision to block was not his own--it was team strategy. What can Kallis do if he was told to go for the draw? If he goes against the team plan, it will only confuse and mess things up further.

It's not like that man, sometimes it is. But sometimes it's not, he has only blocked to save his own average.

Well the way he batted today was quite sensible. He blocked alot of good balls and played well to the bad balls. All top class professional batsmans perform like what Kallis has done so far.

Today was fine, can see him making 100. Even though I still think he protects his average a bit he is still a very good batsman, I just don't think he is in the class or Lara, Tendalker, Ponting.

lol you think his team really needed him? An under 10s side could have won that match.

What annoys me about Kallis is that his performance for the World XI was half hearted.

Anyway they showed a graphic today and Kallis has a high average against weak teams and lower against better opporsition. I am not saying he isn't good. I just don't rank him up with Ponting, Lara, Tendulker, etc.

And i don't think you should put Ponting with Lara,or Tendulkar. We all have different views.(:

Why not? Ponting Average is better and more consistant than Lara's.
Tendulker is a bit ahead though.

I just saw a stat for most runs scored in a year. Ponting is 178 runs away from breaking the record, with an innings to go. Also, this is his 2nd showing in the top 5 of this list, he was also up there in 2003. I guess that is enough of a statistic to prove Ponting's consistency.

I think a lot of people in this thread think there have been only 3 or 4 really great batsmen.

Well, I guess we are talking about the current era, and the batsmen who stand above the rest. And of those, I think there are only a few.

Well, saying Lara and Tendulkar are better than the rest is one thing, but when your Inzamam or your Dravid is mentioned as head and shoulders above the rest as well, that's where you have to accept that there are more than 5 batsmen in the world of that calibre. At the least, you have to include Kallis, Hayden and Ponting, as even if you are not a fan, their achievements must be recognised as comparable.

True. I think people have more trouble when someone says something like Inzamam and Ponting are above the rest, and equal to or greater than Lara and Tendulkar. And there have been people who've said that.
