True. I think people have more trouble when someone says something like Inzamam and Ponting are above the rest, and equal to or greater than Lara and Tendulkar. And there have been people who've said that.

The problem with Lara is that we all know he is awesome and can make 400 in any given test, but if he don't score big he always tends to get out for less than 10, Ponting does not however, but Ponting never scores those huge scores like Lara. But it just shows Ponting is more consistant.

All this talk about Ponting being the greatest batsman brought to mind some statistics I saw on cricinfo a few weeks ago. I found the link to the article again today as it was mentioned in another forum. Take a look at this list, it should speak for itself. Of course this doesn't mean that all the batsmen ahead of Ponting in that list are that much better than him, but it does give you an idea of just how over-rated he is.

I never said that Ponting is the best, I said he was up there with them. And what is it with Indians/Pakistan people giving ponting crap and saying he is crap?

Tendulker to me is the best in the business as far as batting goes, then ponting, but only due to having a better average than Lara.

Well i disagree that you can just assume he goes for his average. All great players, but i would prfer to judge players after they've have played a very long time on all surfaces and conditions.

kallis averages 503 agaisnt Zimbabwe which is why its so high..:p

Kallis average against Zimbabwe isn't 503. It is 169.75, which is still better than Ponting's and Kallis has played even more matches. Ponting has played 3 against them and Kallis 6 against them. Kallis though still has a long way to be the greatest player but certainly has the concentration and ability at the crease.

And you think he did that on purpose?Didn't get out,i thought that was one of the points of batting. Its just like saying Hussey is playing for his average..........

really showed that today:p, Bouncer, Yorker OUT!

i think Inzy is in best form so he's best(currently).and Tendulker and Lara are best from many years.
Ponting is a good batsman and very stylish too but i dont think he's a class batsman like Tendulker,Lara and Inzy.

How does that make him overrated?

The fact that he's apparently a choker in ODIs.

Pakistanis and Indians? Visit other forums, and you'll find that people from all over the world think he's over rated.

30 odd isn't exactly a sucessful conversion for Tendulkar or Brian Lara the worlds "best batsman" so calling Ponting a choker because he averages what? 20 odd is bull..

You're right in saying that 30 odd isn't very impressive for Sachin and Lara, but the fact that even batsmen whom people don't even rate anymore average atleast 7 runs more than Ponting in this specific scenario proves my point IMO.
