New Zealand vs Pakistan @ Newlands, Cape Town

New Zealand got their 2nd win out of 3 fighting off a strong Pakistani side. New Zealand emerged victors by 18 runs and deserved the win with good team contributions with bat and ball. Styris made 59 and Vettori and bond both took 3 wickets each.

Lou Vincent went early after Pakistan decided to chase at the toss. Vincent made 6 before he was bowled by Asif 5 balls into the game. Fulton came in and looked scratchy. He was gone for just 11 from 16 balls, bowled by Afridi with the score on 35. Ross Taylor hit some crisp shots on his way to 18 in 8, but tried one shot to many coming down the track and being stumped by Akmal off Afridi. Styris and McCullum put on 30 together before the latter was bowled by Malik for 30. McCullum's knock gave the impetus for Styris, Oram and McMillan to attack in the final overs. Styris hit a wonderful 59 from 32 deliveries before Asif came back and dismissed him. Oram hit a solid 39* (25) and McMillan 10* (12) to boost New Zealand's score to 173-5. It was a chase able target but with Bond and Vettori it would be difficult to get. Malik took 1-22 and Afridi 2-48 but both equally expensive at 11 and 12 runs per over respectively. Asif was the pick of the Pakistani bowlers with 2 for 22 in 4 overs.

Pakistan also lost a wicket in the first over with the score also on 6. Nazir made 6 in 3 balls before Bond cleaned him up. The next victim was Butt also for just 6 and again being bowled by Shane Bond. Then Vettori joined the fun. He took the wicket of Khan and Hafeez caught by Gillespie and LBW respectively. Hafeez made 15 (7) and Khan 6 (2). Malik fell to Bond, LBW for a two ball duck. Franklin managed to get in on the action collecting Afridi's wicket LBW for 2. This left Pakistan at 41 for 6 and they could never recover. Razzaq and Akmal steadied the sip with a partnership of 46. Akmal went for 38 in 18 balls caught and bowled by Franklin. Arafat and Razzaq managed another good partnership before Razzaq fell victim to Gillespie for 27. Umar Gul managed 23 before being run out and Arafat 32 continued the lower resistance, but it was all in vain. Asif was left 0 not out and Pakistan 18 runs short with 8 balls left. Vettori and bond were great with the ball and took 6 wickets between them. Franklin also picked up a couple and Gillespie very expensive with the 1 wicket. New Zealand will now have high hopes of making the semi's.

That was a great win for the Kiwis. That was a tough Pakistan side. The result was quite realistic as the Pakistani top-order failed. Superb works Treva. I am loving this story.

Some nice scores from the Kiwi batsman there in that convincing win - nice simple pres, I like!

New Zealand will now have high hopes of making the semi's.

They always have that hopes but are expected to knocked out in semis which usually happen in real life too ;) Nice win for Kiwis though.

Brilliant and neat story Trev. :)

Right I have played 10 overs of next game (Sri Lanka vs Zimbabwe) but I am now away from my comp until monday. Sorry for the hold ups those of you who follow.

cheers,
Trev

Ok I'm going to be truthful. I have found it hard playing a game that I win so comfortably. For that very reason I am just going to skip to the final. I will give you a recap of the results from the point I was at:

Sri Lanka beat Zimbabwe by 47 runs
Australia beat Pakistan by 3 wickets
West Indies beat New Zealand by 12 runs
Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka by 6 wickets
India beat Zimbabwe by 71 runs
Australia beat New Zealand by 5 wickets
Pakistan beat West Indies by 6 runs
Bangladesh beat India by 1 wicket

Standings:
Group E
Australia
Pakistan

West Indies
New Zealand

Group F
Sri Lanka
Bangladesh

India
Zimbabwe

Group E was very tight with Pakistan, West Indies and New Zealand all tied with 1 win each. It came down to run rate with Pakistan just edging it.

Now came the semi's. It would be Australia vs Bangladesh and Sri Lanka vs Pakistan. Three sub-continent teams in the semi's, but it was expected that Australia would continue their unbeaten record on through to the finals. It proved so beating the young Bangaldeshi team by 23 runs. Hayden blitzed a brilliant 83 whilst Bracken took 3 wickets. It was a much easier game for Sri Lanka, who had only lost to Bangladesh. Pakistan just couldn't keep Sri Lanka tied down and the score posted by the Sri Lankans proved to much. They won by 49 runs thanks to the best knock of the tournament by Tharanga, scoring 111*.

So the final of the inagural World Twenty20 would be the unbeaten Aussies vs the unstoppable Srilis...

Its going to be a repeat of WC2007? ;) Who knows! But sad to see real T20 Wchampions getting knocked out though.

Bangladesh beat India by 1 wicket

lol :D

South Africa vs Bangladesh @ Newlands, Cape Town

Just posting the scorecard for the last match from the group stages, and what a game it was. The best game of the tournament so far and it meant that the hosts are knocked out at the first round. Facing a tough young Bangladeshi side they posted a good score on a bouncy track. Bosman top scoring with 76. But good knocks from Razzaq (40*), Iqbal (33) and Rasel (31*) meant that Bangladesh got home with just 1 wicket left. The hosts who were held as high favorites for this tournament have been knocked out. This could mean crowds could suffer from now on, but with the games being very close and enjoyable it is still expected that there will be almost full capacity for the rest of the tournament. For Bangladesh it means they go into the super 8's unbeaten and full of confidence.
