The aply named Briggs XI have been plugging away in the lower leagues of Battrick for just over 1 and a half seasons now and since new manager Shaun Briggs took over, the team has been revived. Players have started to remember what a bat is and the groundsman finally has a reason to wake up early on a Friday morning.

With the season half way gone, the team lies at the top of League V.216 with 7 wins from 7 games and as it stands, look hot favourites for promotion. From now until the end of the campaign, we will follow all the ups and downs of what is sure to be a turbulant season for Briggs XI and their manager Shaun Briggs.

The Squad

The most important part of any team are the players of course! With a 16 man squad, the manager has a decent amount of people to work with down at the nets, which makes the opportunity for one-on-one sessions more likely. Let us meet the players who have made the club what it is today.

1. Derek Ainsworth
derekainsworth7ee.jpg

Age: 24
Nationality: English
Season Runs: 826
Season Average: 206.50
Notes: The slogger as he is known around the dressing room is a big hit with the fans and certinally knows how to put on a show. With 12 centuries and 4 half centuries from 21 career innings, he is a feared and well known danger to many opposition bowlers around the circuit.

2. Nalin Ali
nalinali1fm.jpg

Age: 17
Nationality: Indian
Season Runs: 22
Season Average: 22.00
Wickets: 1
Notes: Nalin has only been at the club 18 days but has already been touted as a huge prospect. His amazing leadership qualities saw him instantly take the captaincy from Hamish Hildred, and despite not having much success in his early games, the club has high hopes for the young man.

3. Dan Browne
danbrowne2pc.jpg

Age: 21
Nationality: English
Season Runs: 1
Season Average: 0.50
Wickets: 9
Notes: Despite being so young, Dan seems to have been at the club forever. Once mistake by manager Shaun Briggs as an Off Spinner, Dan has been ever present this year and has never let the team down with his more than capable bowling.

4. Lee Burke
leeburke9oz.jpg

Age: 19
Nationality: Australian
Notes: Lee has yet to make his debut for the club, and has been hampered by injury ever since his arrival. The backroom staff are quitely confident that they have brought over another overseas gem in Burke, but only time will tell.

5. Kenny Forbes
kennyforbes0iw.jpg

Age: 24
Nationality: Australian
Season Runs: 463
Season Average: 154.33
Wickets: 31
Notes: Kenny became the club record signing when he joined for 468,182 from Killeroos CC during the early stages of the season. He has quickly established himself as an amazing all-rounder and has come to the rescue of the team on countless occasions. His wild hair colours have also caught on with the young fans, with many blue haired youngsters seen walking the streets nowadays.

6. Marcus Godden
marcusgodden7ve.jpg

Age: 27
Nationality: English
Notes: Marcus has been a more than able back-up to the main wicketkeeper this year, giving the youngster able advice along the way. Despite not getting much chances with the first team, Marcus is pleased with his role at the club.

7. Allan Henman
allanhenman3zt.jpg

Age: 21
Nationality: English
Season Runs: 6
Season Average: 3.00
Catches: 12
Notes: Allan is tipped for big things at the club, his superb wicketkeeping abilities have been worked on during the close season and are now paying off this year. His batting leaves a lot to be desired for but the coaches are working hard with him to try and improve his technique.

8. Hamish Hildred
hamishhildred5mf.jpg

Age: 28
Nationality: English
Season Runs: 363
Season Average: 60.50
Notes: The former team captain, now squad captain, has been in superb form this year. The eldest member of the team, Hamish is a role model for many of the youngsters and his influencal team talks and decision making during matches have certainally made a difference.

9. Hakim Iftikhar
hakimiftikhar8ru.jpg

Age: 23
Nationality: Pakistani
Season Runs: 128
Season Average: 64.00
Notes: Ever since joining the team last season, Hakim has been a regular in the squad. In his debut game, Hakim scored a 50 which nearly claimed victory against his former club and has not looked back since then. Hakim regularly occupies the mirror and has even managed to get Nalin Ali to model his hair style on his, although Nalin says otherwise.

10. Stewart Low
stewartlow2pi.jpg

Age: 24
Nationality: English
Notes: Stewart is another player who has yet to make his first start of the season for the team, but has often impressed in the nets. Stewart has high hopes for the future but fears he may have to look elsewhere for regular first team opportunities.

11. Ben Mcdonagh
benmcdonagh6tk.jpg

Age: 20
Nationality: English/Irish
Season Runs: 4
Season Average: 2.00
Notes: Ben is a graduate of the academy and has impressed everyone with his knowledge of the game. A regular in the middle order, Ben has never had much chance to show his skills in a game due to the tall order above him, but is a capable batsman and a very big hitter.

12. Kenny Morris
kennymorris0tg.jpg

Age: 22
Nationality: English
Notes: Kenny has found his opportunites lacking this year and has been a regular on the transfer list. Despite his desire to fight for his place at the club, his future seems destined to be spent away from it.

13. Grady Oneil
gradyoneil6ti.jpg

Age: 20
Nationality: English/Irish
Wickets: 12
Average: 26.50
Strike Rate: 34.50
Notes: The most successful graduate from the youth academy, Grady came to the club shortly after the arrival of fellow Irish youngster Ben Mcdonagh and has made a huge impression. With 23 wickets in 12 career matches, Grady has made a very bright start to his career. Fancies himself as a batsman also, but has yet to show those capabilities.

14. Dexter Rowson
dexterrowson2od.jpg

Age: 29
Nationality: English
Wickets: 10
Average: 32.40
Strike Rate: 47.40
Notes: After the departure of fellow spinner Darrell Rankin during the close season, Dexter became the main spinner at the club and has quickly settled into that role. Despite his rather over exuberant look, Dexter knows the game inside out and has as many tricks up his sleeve as Shane Warne.

15. Dan Stamp
danstamp7ui.jpg

Age: 25
Nationality: English
Season Runs: 255
Season Average: 31.88
Notes: Despite being under the shadow of fellow opener Derek Ainsworth, Dan has proven himself to be more than able with the bat. While Derek blasts away at one end, Dan is the steady eddie at the other end and with his sound technique, he can knock the ball around for the singles.

16. Gene Van zy
genevanzy8aa.jpg

Age: 18
Nationality: Australian
Notes: Despite being born in South Africa, Gene grew up in Australia and has been touted for big things with the club. His wacky hair styles have caught on at the club and he is very eagar to get some first team action under his belt.

The Ground

C_17_photogallery_246_list_photo_list_photo_item_6_photo.jpg

Name: The Briggs Dome
Capacity: 13,000
Standing Room: 6600
Uncovered Seats: 2900
Covered Seats: 2700
Members Seats: 800

History: Formerly the site of a supermarket, The Briggs Dome was built in 2005 and only held 6,600 people. With the club in its early days and the people around the local area unsure about the exposure it could bring the area, attendances began low for home games in the early Shaun Briggs era, but as the team began to win games and climb up the table, the crowds began to flock in and demand for tickets was so high, the decision to expand the ground by the board was given approval by the local council in early February. By the end of the month, the building was complete and the ground now holds nearly double what it did originally.

Briggs XI Record At The Briggs Dome
Played: 21
Won: 15
Lost: 6

Highest Team Score: 342/3 - Briggs XI v Preston Panthers
Lowest Team Score: 155 - Briggs XI v Essex BC
Highest Individual Score: Derek Ainsworth 184 (149) - Briggs XI v Birds Heroes
Best Bowling Figures: Kenny Forbes 5/28 - Briggs XI v ashutosh0

Meet The Groundsman
Mo Stannage
_lg_photos_2_014.jpg

Age: 47
Notes: Mo has been the Briggs Dome groundsman since it was first built, he has had previous experience helping out at Headingly for both Yorkshire and England matches before becoming head groundsman at The Briggs Dome.

"It has been a great privilage to work at a modern ground for a team that has been fantastic to me since day one. They make me feel like one of the lads despite me having a few years on them."

Mo does a fine job preparing the pitches and lets it be known that he is the reason Derek Ainsworth scores all his runs, and never shy's away from letting him know that everytime he see's him!
