Story Briggs Bullets...Moving On Up! (Battrick)

Down At The Nets

This weeks nets took place today and their were some positive results from them. After a last minute change, Derek Ainsworth replaced the injured Gene Van zy in the batting nets. The results from the nets are as follows;

Derek Ainsworth - Batting - Proficient to Strong
Nalin Ali - BT Rating - Increased
Allan Henman - BT Rating - Increased
Nigel Semple - Bowling - Respectable to Proficient, Fielding - Abysmal to Woeful

A good day down at the nets, but unfortunately Briggs XI has decided to part way with former opening bowler Kenny Morris. Kenny has found his chances limited this season, and as a result, Shaun Briggs has decided that the best thing for Kenny was to let him go and seek a new team elsewhere. Kenny was an ever present in the Briggs XI team during the Briggs regime, but towards the end of last season and this season, Kenny has been forced to sit on the sidelines with the emergence of Grady Oneil and Kenny Forbes as the leading bowlers in the team. It is thought the recent promotion of Nigel Semple from the youth acadamy spelt the end of Kenny's time with the club.

Semple popped in bowling! Damn, thats gonna make your squad a tough one to beat. I never have any luck with YPs...I am due a good one :(

Thats what I kept telling myself and eventually it happened, dont worry you'll get one eventually!

Eventually...I've been playing for one and a half seasons and the best I have recieved is Karl Deane...well, Mpumelele after his century...

Briggs Lays Down The Gauntlet

Shaun Briggs today issued an open challenge to any team that wishes to play a friendly at The Briggs Dome this coming Sunday. In an interview with a local newspaper, Briggs said he was needing to test out some more of his youngsters in preperation for the Quarter Finals of the Planetcricket Battrick League, and the closing stages of V.216.

"Last week we werent really tested, but it was pleasing to see the lads take them (Spinners United) to the cleaners as I had wanted beforehand. If anyone wants to travel down here this weekend I would welcome the challenge. I would have to exclude any teams who are still in the Battrick League from that invitation though because I dont want anyone gaining an unecessary advantage before they have taken place!"

Briggs XI have won their last 14 games in a row and a victory against the Length Pullers on Friday would surpass the local club records.

Coming Tonight.....Interviews With Nalin Ali and Derek Ainsworth!

Good luck in finding someone on planetcricket (whos not entered in the shield)
The Shield isnt starting yet until the group games are all completed in the League, so teams in that arent excluded from this challenge!

Ali And Ainsworth Speak

In a recent interview for Sly Sports with cricket expert Al Kaholic, Briggs XI captain Nalin Ali and star batsman Derek Ainsworth took some time out to talk about the season so far and their aspirations for the future.

AK: "So lads, the season has got off to an amazing start for the team, what are your feelings on the season so far?"

DA: "Well its been amazing to be perfectly honest, at the end of last season we thought we could give it a good go this year but no one could have imagined we would be unbeaten at this stage. The gaffer has brought in some top players and we've all gelled amazingly well, and with Nalin taking over from Hamish, things are looking very good for the future."

AK: "And Nalin, how has it been for you so far, it must be a lot to take in having only been at the club for a short period of time"

NA: "Well yes, I was delighted to have an opportunity to come to England and play a high standard of cricket with a top team, when I got asked to become the new captain after Hamish stepped down, I was amazed, I had only played one game for the team and I was already being asked to do such an amazing job"

AK: "Yes, a lot of people were shocked when you were given the captaincy after so little time at the club, what did you think about it Derek?"

DA: "The lads knew that Hamish wanted to let go of the captaincy and concentrate on his batting and its done him wonders, but obviously the question was who was going to take over. The local media speculated all sorts and when the gaffer told us it was going to be Nalin, we knew there must be something special about him, he's only 17, a lot of people forget that, and to lead 11 players out every Friday, most of whom are older than you requires a hell of a lot of ability and Nalin has proven he's got the knack."

AK: "Well, you two batted together on Sunday and put on a record opening partnership for the club, that must have been quite pleasing for you?"

NA: "Derek is an amazing batsman, his record proves that, and for me it was an amazing privilege to go out and bat with him. We both love to score runs, and Derek was quick to settle any nerves I was having and he took some pressure off me at the start by hitting boundaries, giving me opportunity to settle in and once I was in I went on to score my first century, so yes it was an amazing experience."

DA: "Yeah it was very enjoyable on Sunday, we found out we were going to open together on Saturday and I basically went through the same routine with Nalin that I go through with Stampy (Dan Stamp) and took it from there. I enjoy batting at The Dome the pitches are amazing and helping Nalin to get to his first ever century was one of the most pleasing experiences I'll ever have"

AK: "So then lads, what are you aspirations for the rest of the season and for next season?"

NA: "Well, if we can go through the season and remain unbeaten, it would be amazing, of course this is what we will look to do, but even if we dont, promotion would be an amazing achievement. Next season will be bigger as the first class games will begin, so we will have to look at those closer to the time."

DA: "I agree with Nalin on that one, promotion would be amazing even if we dont finish unbeaten, and obviously id like to continue scoring my runs and helping the side do that"

AK: "Well guys, its been great talking to both of you, I wish you the best of luck for the rest of the season and hopefully we'll be talking to you next season as part of a promoted team!"

DA: "Thanks mate"

NA: "Yes, cheers"

Preperations For Tomorrow

17/03/2006
Briggs XI v Length Pullers@ The Briggs Dome
Start Time: 10:30am

Pre-Match Notes: With 1 win in 8 games, Length Pullers come to The Briggs Dome needing some quick wins to get them out of relegation trouble. With an inactive manager who has failed to turn up for training and games for the past month, The Length Pullers are in turmoil at the moment and couldnt be coming to The Dome at a worser time. Despite beating the current bottom placed team HUCC Allstarts 2 weeks ago, The Length Pullers are in poor form, being bowled out for only 68 in their previous match. Briggs XI however are in amazing form, and if things go as everyone expects tomorrow, it could be a record breaking day for the home team. The Dome also opens its full capacity tomorrow for the first time since it was redeveloped nearly 3 weeks ago, so a bumper crowd is expected for the game. After the record 372 run partnership on Sunday, Ainsworth and Ali are expected to open the batting with Dan Stamp moving down the order to accomodate this change.

Judging on my last match and Length Pullers last match, depending on the teams for tomorrow, the summary would be as follows:

Code:
                [B]Briggs XI [/B] [B]Length Pullers[/B]
Top Order: respectable mediocre
Middle Order: competent woeful
Lower Order: abysmal [B]V[/B] worthless
Seam Bowling: respectable woeful
Spin Bowling: competent feeble
Fielding: mediocre feeble

Judging from this, we should be considerable favourites for this game, but we will have to be wary of the fact that their openers are no mugs, and if we dont remove them quickly, they could score some important runs. After talking to Shaun Briggs earlier, the squad tomorrow has been confirmed.

Briggs XI Lineup to face HUCC Allstars tomorrow (from):
1.Ainsworth, 2.Ali(c), 3.Hildred, 4.Forbes, 5.Stamp, 6.Iftikhar, 7.Mcdonagh, 8.Henman(wk), 9.Browne, 10.Oneil, 11.Rowson

Briggs' View
"This will be a good test of how well we can beat a weaker opposition. We've doing it convincingly in the past, and if the fine form we showed in the friendly on Sunday continues into this game, then we very well could have another run fest on our hands. But like I always say, we will take nothing for granted in this league and wont celebrate until the match is properly won."

Scorecard

briggsxiinnsvlp4jw.jpg

A bumper crowd of over 11,000 turned out today to see Briggs XI win a record breaking 15th consecutive match. On a fine summers day, things began badly for the home side when Length Pullers won the toss and chose to bat first on a cracking pitch, and an opening stand of 134 looked to be leaving the home side in some trouble, but, as has been the case in recent matches, Length Pullers collapsed and lost 10 wickets for 56 runs with some fine bowling performances from Oneil, Forbes and Rowson who all picked up 3 wickets. Atkinson and Rea did their level best to defy the home side with some patient shot selections, but once the first wicket fell, the rest fell too with the spin and pace of the Briggs XI attack becoming too much for them to deal with. With 191 required, Ali and Ainsworth wasted no time chasing the runs down with a flurry of boundaries coming inside the first 10 overs, leaving them at 81/0 after the 10 over mark. Both Ali and Ainsworth reached their 50's and Ainsworth took a step back and let captain Nalin Ali let loose at the below average bowling on display, ripping his way to an 80 ball century with a huge 6 into cow corner. The record crowd went home happy as Ali hit a boundary to seal the victory for the home side and keep their record at 9 and 0 in the league this season.

Man Of The Match

Managers View

"To say I was not best pleased with the bowlers was an understatement. They did very little in the opening stages of the match and their opening stand showed that. However, the response was superb and was what I have come to expect from this set of lads. When the odds are stacked against them, they reply in the best way possible. Nalin bowled a super spell of swing bowling and I think that gave the others a bit of a wake up call to show that their was something for them, Forbesy, Oneil and Dex all bowled brilliantly after that and to claim 10 wickets for under 60 runs was superb. Nalin and Derek then went out and showed why they are going to be a formidable opening pairing with some superb shots on show, they are yet to fail as a partnership, and long may it continue. Nalin deserved his century, and I was as delighted as anyone when he reached it. A good game for the lads, but the negatives from this game will be worked on, and hard in the coming week."
