Can we get some new umpires?

Wasn't WG Grace known for not being the gentleman though?
If you believe the stories then at times he wasn't although some of those stories are of course untrue. Just as today, there were Gentlemen and there were cheats, WG may not have been the finest example of the period, but he wan't my example. It's just a shame people think that to be competitive these days they can't conduct themselves in a gentlemanly fashion.

Im not going to argue any more because clearly i am the bigger man and can step down first
you mean you cant prove it therefore cannot be bothered sidestepping the questions?

Why is it pointless? West Indies upset them, their first win in ages. Sounds like a great series to me. Umpires on the elite panel should all be good enough. They shouldn't go, Aleem Dar is better then Bucknor, let's put him in this big game.
when you compare india vs australia and west indies vs south africa then you will see which series is pointless and which isnt,
besides when they decided aleem dar was gonna umpire in the windies vs saffie matches they didnt know the windies were gonna win were they,

compared to aus vs ind that series is/was pointless when they decidied which umpires will umpire whiich games

Why would we bring back the ridiculous stuff that was home umpires? Do we really want to make Pakistan unbeatable at home? :p

guess you arent old enough so you came to some conclusions by reading articles,
then ii guess you should read some articles aout the 1992 engand vs pakistan series,

top example of umpiries trying theiir best but still not succeeding when it comes to saving the home team

Once again Mark Benson missed a plumb LBW and a caught behind. This guy is getting rattled by all the criticism and seems he won't give any more decisions in this match...

No series is pointless. West Indies and South Africa are test playing nations and I think you're insulting the ability of the West Indies players

No i mean. You quite clearly want to argue about something i dont. I mean if it really meant alot somebody qualtiy like manee would have posted. So if you can please stop arguing and being very immature.

I didn't watch the match yesterday so could you let me know when it happens. Couldn't find much evidence of it on Cricinfo either.

Well, the new umpires like Nigel Llong need to be given a chance.

Another thing is,the concept of neutral umpires can be done away with.
You do have two really good umpires like Taufel and Aleem Dar.
Get back Dayrl Harper too.

I don't know where you're coming from. Cricket at the moment seems to be the most gentleman-like since it began. I've read plenty of articles and heard a lot of stories about ridiculous incidents in the past century. Players would get away with a lot worse without being punished. They often cried at umpires, abused each other, etc. This is nothing compared to what went on in the past.

The "good old days " have never been good.

Once again, the Era of WG wasn't my example. Indeed cricket did have a dubious past, conduct wise in its early years, but that's not the era I was refering to. Is it more gentlemanly than ever now? Is appealing when you know someone isn't out gentlemanly? Is standing your ground when you know you've knicked it gentlemanly? Is arguing with umpires decisions gentlemanly? Is coming off the pitch ranting and raving gentlemanly? Is pretending that you caught a ball when you know it bounced just inches before you caught it gentlemanly? Is sledging gentlemanly?

I agree wiith kev, controversy has always been in cricket since day one, and it still is.

What era are you referring to then ? The 17th century ? A lot of what you've mentioned has existed throughout the last century.

Obviously there have been occasions of all of what I mentioned in the past. But I certainly remember watching cricket matches in the not too distant past when it was fairly rare to see such things, nowadays its certainly more common. Sledging for example is something I particularly hate and it is relatively new, certainly in English cricket (The term Sledging didn't even exist until the mid 60's, when it became popular in Australia). Ok a bit of gentle humour has been directed at batsmen probably for ever, but it's got out of hand and just seems to be accepted as part of the game now. The same goes for over appealing.

Edit:

The MCC has backed Player Challenge experiments for test cricket in 2008. I fail to see how this will be a success as it was seen as a complete and utter failure in the Friends Provident Trophy.

Read about it here

Sledging has been going on for absolutely ages. Not "just a bit of gentle humour ".

Bill Woodfull, Australia’s captain in the Bodyline series of 1932-33, responding to Douglas Jardine's complaint that a slip fielder had sworn at him: “All right, which one of you b******s called this b****** a b******?”

Certainly in England and South Asia it hasn't, its relatively new (in its current forms), it has been around for quite a while in Australia though. Besides just because it's popular are you so weak willed as to think its ok?

Totally agree. All nations should be treated equally. Saying the Australian and Indian cricket teams are more important then the West Indies and South African one is racial abuse.
