No, that's not quite it. They often wear Burberry products, they tuck their pants into their Rockports and....Well it's pretty much already explained in previous posts.

Ok. I saw someone mention racism so I figured maybe it was slang for a certain racial group.

My experience with Chavs in high school? I hated them and they hated me. I was pretty tall for my age and I was never one to back down from somebody. Although I had never experienced any of the stuff you guys did with chavs, my friends were victims. I became somewhat of a protector for my nerd/geek friends. Eventually I made friends with some Marines-wanna-be's and after that chavs never messed with me.

Where did you go to school? Chavs tend to be associated more with Britain rather than anyway else. It isn't really a new term to describe bullies or young hooligans, its a whole culture.

This wikipedia article should explain it

Its a bit long, so just skim and scan through (particularly look at the stereotype bit)

Look at the similar terms in that article in North America. I'd say I had to deal with people like that in high school.

Well i'm not sure what a chav is either, but i hate them also(just trying to go with the flow).Sometimes i feel like hitting someone, but i find it is better to threaten.Knowone would try it with me anyway, but it think violence for fun,or violence to humiliate is extremely low.

Fair enough, I was just saying most people tend to think of them as an Britain-only thing. I'm not saying there aren't similar cultures elsewhere, but the term is usually only applied in Britain.

Having said that, theres no law against using the term anywhere else ;)

I knew what you meant. In our high schools though, people like that aren't a big problem. Its the jocks and posers who are the real problem to deal with.

Some are very nice.

perhaps you have a different definition of chavs to me

i only use the word chav (well i use a different term, scalls, possibly just a liverpool term though) to describe people (well teenagers) who cause trouble and act violently in the streets for no reason

and i cant see how any of them are nice people

Here is my definition.

A chav is someone that wears cheap jewelry, burberry and other products in the picture. They hang round in huge groups with petty crimes (or large ones) or just associated with hanging round places suspiiciously.

Calling sumone a chav is by al means an insult so no chavs are "nice" as Usy said`
