Oh dear, your honeymoon period has came crashing down in two games!!! Come on I've said you will be in the play-offs at the end of the season. May I suggest changing to a defensive formation so you don't lose the next game and build the teams' confidence again.

Well very unlucky with decisions so far, unlike in your last story. Good game against Coventry but that loss to Hull will hurt, as well as the one against Preston. At least your in a more realistic position now :p

Against Coventry? Did you mean Charlton :p I'll turn it around. Just you watch!

I wouldn't say that 4-4-2 was attacking but hey! :p May well do so, but I have been a bit unlucky recently, I think that things will be looking up by the end of October :) Thanks for all teh comments guys, I'm on 5 pages now! :D

SEPTEMBER 2007 OVERVIEW: COVENTRY CITY

My second month in charge and it had start fantastically with a superb win over West Brom and then Barnsley but it was downhill after that with no wins in the last 4 games of the month. I wasn't very happy with the month, but you win some and you lose some, and I still had the backing of the fans and the board so I suppose I must have been doing something right,

Coventry 4 - 2 West Brom
A great start to the month, a fantastic win and by far the best performance of the month. Mifsud stole the show with 2 goals, and one each from Leon McKenzie and Ellery Cairo, Bostjan Cesar and Jonothan Greening replied for the Baggies, but they were only consolations in the end.

Coventry 2 - 1 Barnsley
Fresh from a brilliant win over West Brom, it was on to somewhat smaller opposition in Barnsley. Another good result, however Barnsley did scare us occasionally but a sublime free kick from Daniel Fox and a late Lee Martin goal gave s the three points in the end. Mostto equalised for Barnsley but it as soon cancelled out.

Preston 3 - 1 Coventry
Our first away day of the month, and it wasn't a happy one at all. it started well with Stephen Hughes scoring a good goal after just 10 mins, but from then on it was all Preston, with two goals form Darren Carter and one from loanee Paul Gallagher securing the match for North End. A poor performance from the players, but this is the game where the defence lost their confidence.

Charlton 3-3 Coventry
A Great game for the neutrals, but we had a 3-0 lead after just 31 mins with three fantastic goals, 2 from Thiago and one from Mifsud, but then the defence conceded 3 very sloppy goals from McLeod, Gray and Varney and we had chucked 2 points away. But it was definately a point gained rather than 2 lost.

Wigan 4-0 Coventry

Worst performance of the month no doubt. The players seemed to give up from the start, Mifsud throwing away a number of great opportunities, and they were punished every time, a hat trick from Julius Agahowa and one from Marcus Bent saw us beaten horrendously and to make matters worse, winger Lee Martin and midfielder Michael Doyle both got injured. Awful game, and I was glad to see the back of Wigan.

Coventry 0-1 Hull
An unusual home defeat, and a very boring game. Henrik Pedersen gave Hull the lead on 17 mins and we thought we'd stolen a point late on, Cairo heading home a Fox corner, but the ref somehow saw something wrong in it and disallowed. Shocking decision, and it cost us the game. Not for the first time we had been cheated.

OCTOBER FIXTURES:

Sheff Weds H 2/10/07
Plymouth A 6/10/07
Stoke H 20/10/07
QPR A 23/10/07
Southampton H 27/10/07

League table:

Only 1 team I'm playing this month is ahead of me in the league at the moment (Southampton) so I am hoping for an unbeaten month. May well do the first game in a min.

So it was the first game of a very important month, and we were at home to Sheffield Wednesday. Wednesday were currently 18th in the league and not doing too well, so we had to fancy our chances, however we were below par too, without a win in 4 games. So it was bound to be a very cagey contest.

Injuries now. 3 players were now out. Andy Marshall returned finally after chest injury, but Lee Martin was out with his knee injury. Michael Doyle was still out, and De Zeeuw was unfortunately out with a pulled ham string suffered in sprints in training. So they all missed out.

Now to the team news. Andy Marshall was back so he retook his place in goal instead of Dimi Konstantopoulos, De Zeeuw was out, so Scott Dann started, Ellery Cairo came in for Jay Tabb and Leon Best started instead of Thiago. Robbie Simpson made the bench.

I arrived at the Ricoh Arena thinking about the month ahead, and I believed that an unbeaten month was a very realistic target, and I knew the boys could pull it off after a tough few games prior. The lads arrived and I asked them what they thought and they agreed with me, and we talked about the game in question and out we went on a mission.

A crap start, thornton giving the ball to Johnson, he ran, crossed and Showunmi finished. A minute later, we equalised in style, Ellery Cairo repaying me for picking him again by releasing a thunderbolt from 25 yards. On 5 mins, we nearly took the lead, Mifsud had it on teh edge, tried to lob Walker, but he tipped it over. On 22 mins, Wednesday had a great chance, Sodje getting the wrong side of Dann, but Marshall pressured huim and forced his shot wide. On 44 mins, we should have scored again, Cairo down the left, put Mifsud through, but his shot took a deflection and went wide. Half time, and it hadn't been a bad hafl, we had tried hard and we had had the better of teh possesion, but our finishing was poor, especially Mifsud, so I brought him off for Simpson.
Simpson had an immediate effect, Best put him through, and he shot well from 15 yards, but it was just tipped over. Well played Simpson. On 64 mins, Wednesday had a chance, Enoch Showunmi sowing the ball to Fox and shooting from 15 yards, but Andy Marshall made save of teh season. On 70 mins, we had a chance, a great cross from Gray on the right, headed by Best but it was just over. On 80 mins, my sub was proved right, as Hughes had a shot, the rebound fell to Simpson who did an acrobatic bicycle kick sraight into the roof of the net. What a goal. 2-1. Then I brought Tabb on for Thornton and Thiago on for Best. On 85 mins, Cairo nearly scored another beauty, he hit from 20 yards, but his shot was brilliantly tipped over by Walker. And on 87 mins, we made absolutely sure, a great Fox corner falling right onto the head of Elliott Ward who made it 3-1. And on 90 mins, we got another, Tabb winning the ball in the centre and found Thiago who slotted home cooly. And that was it. A sterling performance, and we showed the fitness leves to score 3 goals in the last ten minutes. The defence were solid for once, bar 1 goal, and I was very happy to get the month of to a flying start. A very convincing win.

Now this is why I love the Championship! Such a close contest. I know it's only 8 games into the season but even Cardiff could still win the league. If it was the Premiership then Arsenal, Man U and Chelsea would already be about 8 points clear from everybody else. I must admit that I am upset that West Brom aren't top! :p Come on Coventry! Great win against Sheffield Wednesday. Now another 3 win will put you near the top.

graet review and brilliant start to the month i think you are going to finish mid table to be honest inless you make some quality signings in January. Great story and a great read though.

6/10/07

In the second game of the month, we had a trip to the westcountry to face the 'Best in the West' Plymouth Argyle. Plymouth were currently 16th in the league, with just 2 wins all campaign against Ipswich and fellow westcountry side, Bristol City, and were coming off the back of a 2-2 draw with struggling 2nd from bottom side Colchester. We were suddenly up beat, after a terrific 4-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday and thoroughly looked forward to today's game.

Injuries now. The same 3 players were out. Lee Martin was out with his knee injury. Michael Doyle was still out, and De Zeeuw was out.

Now to the team news. Only changes from the side that beat Wednesday were Simpson in for Mifsud, after Mifsud has been very out of touch recently, and Tabb in for Thornton.

So we all arrived at Plymouth's small ground Home Park, and it was nearly empty! Just 7000 fans turning up and you wondered where all the support was from the westcountry, perhaps they all supported Man Utd and Arsenal. Anyway, we got into the dressing rooms to get ready, and we were on task. I could tell. We had our pre match chat, and off we went for the game.

A slow start, we gave the ball away a number of times and we were nearly made to pay, as Abdou beared down on goal, but struck his shot inches wide. On 13 mins, Argyle had a chance to take the lead, Abdou passing to Summerfield who charged into the area, but his shot was very poor, and trickled wide. On 20 mins, we took the lead. Simpson made an amazing reverse pass to Best who turned and absolutel hammered the ball past the keeper. Larieu had no chance. 5 mins later, it was up the other end, a ball over the top from Seip, was headed by Maclean, but Marshall tipped over. On 40 mins, we got a vital second goal, Tabb doing wel on the edge of the area, passed short to Best, who shielded the ball, turned and smashed another home. Best was on form today. Half time, and what a solid performance from everyone, even the defence had been in shape. At half time, I brought on Thiago for Simpson.
A slow start, Plymouth earned a corner on the right, which was whpped in and met by MacLean, but Marshall made an absolutely amazing save to stop Plymouth getting themselves back into the game. On 63 mins, I brought Mifsud on for Cairo to play on the right wing. On 67 mins, Mifsud started well, he beat 2 Argyle men and whipped a delightful ball in, Best looked odds on for a hat trick but it came off the top of the bar and out for a goal kick. Unlucky son. On 75 mins, Plymouth had a great chance, Djordic had an opportunity from close range, but he somehow smashed it high and wide. It was easier to score. On 80 mins, I brought McKenzie on for Gray. A minute later, Thiago nearly made it 3, a great run over the top and he was fed in by Best, he rounded the keeper, but his effort was blocked off the line. On the last minute of added time, Best nearly sealed a hat trick, a poor goal kick from Larieu fell to him, and he sprinted towards goal, but Romain Larieu made up for his mistake with a fine save, and that was the last kick of the game. Another win, and a very comfortable.

STOKE GAME REARRANGED

Coventry City's game against Stoke has been rearranged to the 31st October 2007 because some players are out on International duty.

STEPHEN HUGHES OUT FOR A MONTH

Coventry midfielder Stephen Hughes is out for a month after he suffered a thigh strain in training. Hughes, a former Arsenal player, has just got himself back into the side and put in a series of good performances and will no doubt be disappointed at the injury.

ROTHERHAM AND MORECAMBE IN FOR DAVIS

Rotherham and Morecambe are both in a head to head race to sign Liam Davis on loan. Both have had three month loan deals accepted and Davis has been told he is free to gain some first team experience after being promoted from the youth academy in the pre season.

DAVIS LOANED OUT TO ROTHERHAM

Coventry's young left winger Liam Davis has been loaned out to Rotherham after they fought off competition from Morecambe. Dais will stay at Rotherham for at least 3 months, and manager Craig Tough said he hopes Liam Davis can make a name for himself.

VARGA LOANED OUT TO COVENTRY

Sunderland's out of favour defender Stanislav or Stan Varga has joined Coventry on a 3 month loan deal. Varga goes straight into the squad to face QPR on Tuesday. Varga will wear the number 23 shirt.

23/10/07

Today, we had a tough game against London side QPR at Lofts Road. QPR were currently 14th in the Championship and having a below par season so far, without a win in 9 games. Although the fans seem content with their position, the manager Di Canio thinks that they should be performing better than they are. We were doing well all the way up in 5th position after two good wins against Sheffield Wednesday and Plymouth Argyle, and we were much looking forward to the game.

Injuries now. 3 players were out. Michael Doyle returned right on que to replace an injured Stephen Hughes, and Lee Martin was obviously still out with that unfortunate knee injury, and Arjan De Zeeuw was kept out with his pulled hamstring.

Now to the team news. Hughes was injured so Micky Doyle came back from injury to play in midfield with Jay Tabb., and new loan signing Stan Varga came in for Scott Dann. They were the only changes from the side that beat Plymouth.

So we got to London and Loftus Road thinking that yet another 3 points was a real posibillity and that we could have our 3rd win on the bounce here at QPR. It was a big match and you could tell that both sides wanted the win, so it was going to be a hearty game with plenty of tackles going in I'm sure. We had our chat and out we went.

A slow start, the first chance coming to QPR on 10 mins. Ben Sahar taking the ball forward and passing to Mikele Leigertwood who's shot was tipped out for a corner. On 11 mins, QPR thought they'd scored, Blackstock tapping home from 2 yards, only to see the flag go up to his left, he looked in disbelief and held his head in his hands. But from the replay, it definately looked offside. On 14 mins we had our first go, Fox had a free kick on the left, he crossed to Best who's header went just over. On 23 mins, QPR had a great chance, Blackstock was about to hti home when Stan Varga came out of nowhere to tackle him. What a challenge from Varga. On 42 mins, QPR were piling on the pressure, Nick Ward was denied by yet another phenomenal challenge from Stan Varga. Half time and it had been a very poor half attack wise. I was very pleased with the defence because they had a lot of work to do, but the attacking players had done nothing. SO at half time I brought Mifsud on for Simpson.
Mifsud made an immediate impat, Gray crossed a ball in from the left, he volleyed and thought it was in, only to see Lee Camp somehow save it,. On 57 mins, QPR had another chance, Blackstock found himself alone in the area, but Marshall saved well. 30 seconds later and it was 1-0 to QPR, Fox left Rowlands all alone on the right and Rowlands scored. Stupid defending from Fox and it may well cost us the game. I brought McKenzie on for Tabb. On 63 mins, we had a chance to equalise, Mifsud had the ball in teh centre, and had 2 options to pass, but was greedy and shot oer. Very poor from Mifsud. On 66 mins, we finally got a goal, Lee Camp with an awful clearance, Leon Best picked it up and forced hoem from 6 yards. He was on great form. On 69 mins, we nearly went ahead, Gray beat 2 men on the left, crossed and fond McKenzie unmarked, but his header was well saved by Camp good play.On 75 mins, we had another chance to steal the points, Mifsud this time put best through who nearly scored but again, it was Camp to the rescue. Still 1-1. Then I brought Thiago on for Cairo. Full time, and I had to settle for a point. After the first half I would have taken that. Anyway, that extended our unbeaten run so I couldn't complain.

QPR are a good side and that's a pretty good result. Sheffield Wednesday I expect you to beat them, and you did convincingly. The Plymouth result is one of the best all season. Away from home to Plymouth is a very tough fixture, but Leon Best looks in good touch and he won you the game.

Yeah, he did finish well, which is what I was lacking in. Mifsud seems very out of touch on the finishing side of things but made a big impact when he came on, Stan Varga was outstanding, well worth loaning out. Thanks for the vote by the way trev, it means a lot :crying: :p

Ha no worries mate. Thought that you and Jaz had brilliant stories last time and now he's won it I hope that you do this month. Cracking story :)

COVENTRY SIGN LITMANEN

Coventry City have signedformer Ajax player Jari Litmanen on a permanent deal. Litmanaen had an unfortunate achilles injury during his trial so he won't be available for a couple of months yet, but manager Craig Tough believes that Litmanen could play a vital part in Coventry's promotion push when he does get fit.

27/10/07

Today, after a decent 1-1 draw against QPR it was another trip down south to face Southampton. They were currently 10th in the league, 3 places behind us as we dropped 2 places last game. Southampton were not on the greatest form, without a win in three, but confidence was never low at St Mary's, so it was going to be another tough game.

Injuries now. 2 players were out. Stephen Hughes had a thigh strain, and Lee Martin had a knee injury knee injury, butArjan De Zeeuw returned from his pulled hamstring.

Now to the team news. A few changes from the side that drew to QPR, Mifsud earned a starting XI recall and forced Robbie Simpson to the bench. I decided a change of formation was in order against a very strong attacking side, I played 5 at the back, De Zeeuw returned in place of Doyle.

Me and the lads arrived at St Mary's in Southampton, confident as always and looking forward to the game ahead as we did to most games. We got into the dressing rooms, and everyone was content at winning this game after hopes of a 100% winning month were dashed against QPR, but there was still an unbeaten month to play for and thats what we all knew we could achieve. I told the lads what I expected from the game and that we were going to have to defend as a unit against Southampton, as they are a very good attacking side with the likes of Bradley Wright-Phillips, Marek Saganowski, and former Sky Blue, Stern John in their armoury. Out we went for the game.

A good start, straight away, Fox put a ball into the area, Mifsud headed but his header went wide. Unlucky. On 8 mins we shoudl have scored, tabb recieved the ball inside the area, but his shot went over. We needed to start finishing those. On 18 mins, we gifted Saints a goal, Marshall (yes, the keeper) controlled on the edge of his own area, got it taken off him and Wright Phillips scored. What a stupid w*nker. On 26 mins, we nearly scored again, Mifsud this time found himself in space in teh area, but hit his shot at teh keeper. FINISH!!!! On 36 mins, what a chance. Best all on his own 6 yards out, and somehow he put it wide. Don't ask how. What a f*cking waste. On 42 mins, we finally finished one, a long ball from Bardsley was nodded on to Mifsud by Gray who smashed home. Great goal. And that was half time, and it had been poor really, an awful goal to concede and we had about 10 chances which should have been converted. I made 1 change, Thiago on for Best.
On 51 mins, we thought we'd scored, Tabb passing to Mifsud who again smashed home, but again, the linesman had to make a name for himself by disallowing another perfectly good goal. On 63 mins, we had a go again, great p0lay from Thiago, he played an amazing bakll to Mifsud who turned and shot, but his effort was tipped over. On 71 mins, Saints also thought they'd scored, but that too was disallowed for offside. Wrongly. On 78 mins, we had another fantastic chance, Mifsud going for power rather than accuracy and his shot went miles over. What a chance. I made my last changes. McKenzie on for De Zeeuw and Thornton on for Tabb. And that was the last noteable action of the half min a boring end to teh match. It was a good point really.

Not a bad result, not a great one either. But at least Misfud got abck on the scoresheet, as he will be a big player and his form could be crucial to you going up or not. Seems they played better bad that shows good resilience to grab a point. Good to see that your getting points away from home. Away form can decide where you end up and so far it's pretty good :)

31/10/07

Right, today it was the rearranged fixture against Stoke. We were currently unbeaten all month and we really wanted to have an unbeaten month, so I knew we would work hard today. Stoke were currently 13th in the league, and not doing too well overall. Although, they were unbeaten in three, with 2 1-0 wins against Preston, and more impressively, West Brom, but they didn't do too well last time out, in a 1-1 draw against strugglers, Sheffield Wednesday. We were upbeat and confident, and we hoped that it would shine through on the pitch.

Injuries now. 2 players were out. Stephen Hughes had a thigh strain, and Lee Martin had a knee injury knee injury.

Now to the team news. Only a couple of changes from the side that drew 1-1 with Southampton, Thiago came in for Gray and I changed the formation to a 5-3-1-1 as I thought the defence looked terrific when there was 5, Mifsud played on the right, with Best a lone striker up front, with Thiago just behind and Tabb behind him. And Scott Dann replaced Robbie Simpson on the bench.

So, we got to the Ricoh, upbeat and content on winning the three points, and carrying out an unbeaten month which would be fantastic. We got into the dressing rooms, had our usual chat but with more umph as we were really hoping on getting 3 points, and wouldn't come away without a fight. Anyway, we got out and off we went.

A really poor start, straight from kick off, Ricardo Fuller passed to Thompson, who hit a shot from 15 yards, and it nestled in the bottom corner. 1-0 down after just 25 seconds. Shocker. On 4mins, we nearly equalised, a fantastic ball from Stan Varga, which Cairo latched on to, he had a great effort from 30 yards, but it went inches over. Unlucky. On 19 mins, we equalised with an amazing goal, Ward hit a long ball which Best knocked down, Mifsud controlled, and volleyed straight into the top corner.. What a goal. 1-1. On 25 mins, Phil Bardsley picked up a knock and had to go off, I brought on Scott Dann for him. On 29 mins, we nearly scored, Mifsud was one on one with te keeper, but the keeper did well, and saved. Still 1-1. Half time, and we had done okay, a poor start, but we had got ourselves back in the game. 1 change at Half time, Thornton on for Tabb.
On 54 mins, we had another chance, best was fantastically put through by Thornton, but he tried to cut inside but his shot was some way wide. On 64 mins, we had a chance, Thonrton hit a great shot from 25 yards, it thudded off teh post and fell to Thiago, who tapped in but he was offside. I think it was a good decision. On 69 mins, we had another great effort saved, Daniel Fox hit a free kick from all of 35 yards, but Simonsen did brilliantly to tip over. On 82 mins, we got the goal we deserved, Daniel Fox lined up another free kick, this time from just 23 yards out, he lined it up but unexpectedly, Stan Varga took it and put it into the top corner fantastically. Amazing from the defender, what a signing. 2-1. I made my last changes. McKenzie on for Cairo. On 92 mins, Stoke nearly equalised, Thompson hit another speculative free kick, but it was well turned over by Marshall. And that was the last action of the half, what a performance, the only time Stoke really threatened was when they scored in the first minute. What a winning goal from Stan Varga. So it was an unbeaten month, 5 unbeaten. Great month.
