Bayern Munich land Pogrebnyak
German champions Bayern Munich have completed a ?28 million move for Russian striker Pavel Pogrebnyak from rivals VfB Stuttgart.
The news was first made official on VfB's website this morning before Bayern confirmed it on theirs in the afternoon.
It is a major acquisition for Louis Van Gaal's side considering that Pogrebnyak was the Bundesliga's leading scorer for the past two seasons. The Bavarians had paid
?30 million for Pogrebnyak's predecessor at Stuttgart, Mario Gomez, in 2009.
"Pavel took the Bundesliga by storm when he arrived in 2009 and I am delighted to have him playing for us this season," said Van Gaal shortly after the news was made public.
"His positioning, ball control, finishing is just fantastic and he is capable of changing the course of the games by producing moments of absolute magic, as he has done for Stuttgart, Zenit and also the Russian national side."
For Stuttgart though, despite the huge fee received, the move is a big blow considering how close they came to beating Bayern to the title last season.
But Sporting Director, Horst Heldt, said there was not much they could do about it as the player expressed the desire to leave.
"Pavel very politely told us that he wanted to play for Bayern, and we don't believe in holding players against their will. We have received a good price as well for him just as was the case with Mario in 2009," said Heldt.
"Bayern will always remain a dream club for most players and when they come knocking with the right price, there is not much you can do.
"We thank Pavel for his outstanding contribution to the club in the two seasons he was here and wish him all the best in the future."
Stuttgart manager, Markus Babbel, too was of the same opinion.
"It is very difficult for a player to miss out on an opportunity to play for a club like Bayern. So when they offered the money that we were looking for, it was really an open and shut case," he said.
However the 38-year old does not believe selling his star striker will damage his side's chances next season.
"People said the same thing when Mario Gomez left in 2009. Bayern have ofcourse gotten even stronger now, but we have a good team ourselves. Pogrebnyak stepped up when Gomez left, and now someone else has to do that."
Pogrebnyak scored a total of 54 goals for Stuttgart in all competitions in the last two seasons. He was named the Russian Player of the Year in 2010. He hasn't played for Stuttgart in the Bundesliga this season because of a back injury from which he is yet to recover fully.
