This kinda thing happening in international cricket is just ridiculous. Quite unbelievable. Dhoni was caught at mid on, but the umpire signaled a no ball. Since it's common practice nowadays to check with the 3rd umpire Ian Gould did so.

They put up a replay of ANOTHER delivery, which showed the foot a couple of inches behind the line, not only making Gould look incompetent, but also leading to Dhoni being given out. The reason for this ?

IMG acknowledged the error and tried to explain how it occurred. "IMG Media takes its responsibilities on this matter very seriously," their spokesman said. "This was a case of human error, compounded by a senior replay operative having to return home at very short notice."

Maybe I'm being harsh, maybe I should allow for human error, etc etc. But I think this is quite ridiculous that something like this can happen on an international stage. /rant

Haha, whilst the DRS *may* have prevented this, lets not blame the BCCI for everything ! If anything it's Trott's fault...

Funny that some people are lashing out at umpires and DRS here. The umpires and DRS had nothing to do with this mistake, it was all the TV network's fault. Human error, it happens people...

Although it still annoys me that these things have to be checked post event. Why can't Gould just make a call and stick with it. If he missed a no-ball by 1cm would it really be that bad?

Well, 1 cm can make all the difference so I have no problem with umpires checking with the TV replay....the correct one.

I'm not blaming the umpires or the BCCI. Just suggesting that it won't help their already low confidence in the system.

Nothing new here, Gilchrist was given run out in SL in 1999 in similar fashion. I remember Gilchrist standing there, his bat was PAST the stumps when the ball hit them, he was in by miles, but was given out. 3rd umpire was fired. Commentators were lost for words when he was given out, they thought it was a mistake, wrong button or something, but the 3rd umpire was watching a completely different delivery.

Since you mention it, do you have a recording of that dismissal that you could kindly upload on youtube :p ?

I think it might be 'vigilante umpiring'. When they see a player or team that like to bend the rules, umpires sometimes like to impress upon them that two can play at that game...

No it was the TV coverage's mistake. The 3rd umpire can only view the replay the production truck sends him. They sent him the wrong one...It's that simple. If anyone is looking for conspiracies, ask the broadcaster.
