Seeing Wayne Larkins in the side reminds me of one of those weird 90s selection issues.

Gooch really rated him and wanted him in the side, despite him being the polar opposite of Gooch's ideas about training / discipline / fitness - he believed in Larkin's talent.

You get the sense that he had to be forced to pick Gower though, despite his sublime talent still being very much in evidence.

Worth noting that in this series Larkins was already batting with a Surridge Turbo 333 made to commemorate Gooch’s triple against India in the summer, so simple arse-kissing can’t be ruled out.

IIRC John Morris was also using an SS Turbo (though he rejected orthodoxy by using a red grip instead of a blue one). Can't remember whether he switched to the 333, though.

I always felt a bit sorry for Hick walking out to bat in test matches with his DF 405. The sledges write themselves.
