I saw that Jennings isn't in the squad for Sri Lanka so I guess his chances of starting in India are slim. Burns is currently only missing Sri Lanka. I don't think it's been confirmed that he will not tour India. So, I don't see who opens other than Crawley or Moeen. I guess Bairstow opening in Sri Lanka isn't as risky as Jason Roy opening in England against Australia but it still seems an unusual choice. Of course Bairstow, like Denly, has been a scapegoat, shuffled around to accommodate Buttler and Root.
  • Crawley and Sibley looked decent this time last year and Crawley's 267 was when he was in after 5 overs.
  • Bairstow... well he needed to be dropped. But his position in the side was completely disrupted by Buttler coming into the team. His one match in Sri Lanka was at 3 and he scored 100 and he averages 40 in India. Honestly, if you take two batsman out of the 6/7 that played last summer I don't see how Bairstow is not considered in the top two of the rest. I'd pick him ahead of Buttler to be honest. I guess I'd give Foakes a chance but Buttler had a decent summer. It'll be interesting to see how his form is impacted having been in the IPL and England T20. I think he benefitted more than any other player from playing only test cricket last summer.
  • Moeen to come in for Woakes at 7, from the last series. I'd like to see them show some faith in Woakes and he averages 70 at 7 for England but I think they'll want to play Mark Wood or Olly Stone in Sri Lanka. I don't think they'll rest Anderson or Broad. Mo's most success with the bat has come at 7 so the idea of him opening would only be really if they went with a left field choice.
1 Sibley
2 Crawley
3 Bairstow
4 Root
5 Pope
6 Buttler
7 Moeen
8 Bess
9 Broad
10 Wood/Stone
11 Anderson

I could see them going Leach instead of Bess, which would be slightly unfair on Bess. Maybe not in Sri Lanka (I don't know how many left handers they have) but against India? They'd have to bank on them playing Pant and Jadeja otherwise it's all right handers. I think it's one reason they've been trying to coax Rashid back. He is as competent as any other spinner with the bat too (including Mo, based on his last couple of years).

Apparently looking like not gonna be any tv deal, which sucks
If SKY doesn't show it someone will. If not BT then maybe Amazon. Would prefer Amazon purely because I have Prime. I have enjoyed watching Pakistan v Zimbabwe and New Zealand v West Indies on YouTube but I can't imagine the rights for India v England wouldn't be picked up.

1 Sibley
2 Crawley
3 Bairstow
4 Root
5 Pope
6 Buttler
7 Moeen
8 Bess
9 Broad
10 Wood/Stone
11 Anderson

That looks realistic, even though I don't like it very much. Also, no Stokes looks like a bit of an issue too. In that case...

:eng: :bat: Dom Sibley
:eng: :bat: Joe Root
:eng: :bat: Zak Crawley
:eng: :bat: Ollie Pope
:eng: :bat: Dan Lawrence
:eng: :wk: Jos Buttler
:eng: :ar: Chris Woakes
:eng: :bwl: Dom Bess
:eng: :bwl: Jack Leach
:eng: :bwl: Stuart Broad
:eng: :bwl: Jimmy Anderson

Would be my solution

Yeah I'd stick with Woakes myself as a direct stand in for Stokes and give Leach a try. I just think they'll want more than 3 RFM in Sri Lanka and Woakes is the easiest player to drop (on reputation not form). Who knows maybe they'll do something unexpected.

I mean, the fun option would be to have Woakes, then pick Archer Mark Wood and Tom Barber to just try bombing out the Sri Lanka top order. Obviously Barber's not there and is completely raw, but I think it would be enjoyable to watch because Barber is meant to be roughly Archer pace when he gets a rhythm going

Saw on Reddit that Disney might be showing the India series. They own the BCCI rights, so would be using one of their services rather than selling on rights in UK.

Meanwhile, Amazon are interested in the 2021/22 Ashes.
On Disney+? :p

I think they own Hotstar which is a UK channel (dunno really) but sticking it on Disney+ might not be the worst thing to do.
Hotstar's digital platform is actually broadcasting all the matches played by India in India right since 2015. They have an agreement with Star Sports India right from the time it was introduced. I don't know about UK but since England would be playing in India they might want to make it available for their UK audience as well. I seriously don't know much about it. :p

Yeah, Star Sports is owned by Disney so it's not really anything unusual. Sky won't deal with them currently I believe (although they showed the IPL recently) so it leaves a gap in the market. I think the big issue is it's another subscription (whether its Disney + or Hotstar UK) to pay for a lot of people. Amazon, for the Ashes, would be the same complaint but I have Amazon Prime so it's not a big deal.

It is actually Disney+ Hotstar in India now since the launch of Disney+ platform.
