One good thing about this series is we will have a discussion between English and Indian fans. With the Australian series, we only had like 1 other person who was non Indian.

Lots of cribing and crying over homesides coming ahead. Just need one bad session for the floodgates to open.

Brace yourselves.

Interesting squad I've selected for India

With Buttler away home after the 1st test, Foakes might finally get a chance...

I would not say that inspires a great deal of confidence at all.

:eng: :bat: Opener 1
:eng: :bat: Opener 2
:eng: :bat: Ollie Pope
:eng: :bat: Joe Root
:eng: :ar: Ben Stokes
:eng: :bat: Dan Lawrence
:eng: :wk: Ben Foakes
:eng: :bwl: Jack Leach
:eng: :bwl: Jofra Archer, Mark Wood or Olly Stone
:eng: :bwl: Stuart Broad
:eng: :bwl: Jimmy Anderson

  • The way I see it, the English spinners aren't good enough to be trusted to carry the side to a victory in Sri Lanka, so they probably can't be trusted to do the same in India. Therefore, you've got to trust the side to do the best it can given the circumstances.
  • The main spinner is Jack Leach - he's not a world-beater, but he is actually a Test class spinner which gives him a leg-up.
  • The second spinner is Joe Root - 29 Test wickets at 50, out of 49 first-class wickets at 50. That's pretty bad, but he has the advantage of being able to think like a batsman.
  • The third spinner is Ben Stokes - I'm sure I heard that he bowls good off-breaks every now and again.
  • The openers, I'm not sure about. Sibley and Crawley have shown themselves to be completely incompetent against spin, and I'm pretty sure Rory Burns is similar. I'd almost suggest *deep breath* sticking with Bairstow. In reality though, it'll be Burns-Sibley-Crawley
Here's a particularly rogue solution to the subcontinent problem:

:eng: :bat: Keaton Jennings
:eng: :bat: Jonny Bairstow
:eng: :bat: Ollie Pope
:eng: :bat: Joe Root
:eng: :ar: Ben Stokes
:eng: :bat: Dan Lawrence
:eng: :wk: Ben Foakes
the bowlers

Jennings seems to be a good choice considering his past performance in the subcontinent. But don't even think of opening with Bairstow. Bumrah & Ishant would feast on him like anything. He can definitely put pressure on Ashwin and the other spinner who would play but not the pacers with the new ball.

I think the Indian eleven will probably be the following -
  1. :bat: Rohit Sharma
  2. :bat: Shubman Gill
  3. :bat: Cheteshwar Pujara
  4. :c::bat: Virat Kohli
  5. :bat: Ajinkya Rahane
  6. :wkb: Rishabh Pant
  7. :ar: Axar Patel/:ar:Hardik Pandya
  8. :ar: Washington Sundar/:bwl:Kuldeep Yadav
  9. :ar: Ravichandran Ashwin
  10. :bwl: Mohammed Siraj/:bwl:Ishant Sharma
  11. :bwl: Jasprit Bumrah
As for my comments on the eleven -
  1. Rohit had a better outing in Australia than his competition, and he's expected to perform at home, so he's pretty much a slot in for the first opening slot.
  2. Gill's performance in Australia was remarkable, and his record at home in the domestic circuit more than speaks for itself, and much like Rohit he also won over his competition in Australia.
  3. Pujara will be a guaranteed pick, no doubt about it, batsmen like Pujaria are always handy to have to control the flow of the innings in the worst-case scenario, I think we might see his strike rate return closer to his career average in this series.
  4. Kohli will obviously return as the skipper and I think it's fine and more than deserved - his home record is nothing short of stellar, hopefully, his century drought will end in this series.
  5. Rahane has been proclaimed the vice-captain, and honestly, I think one of the leaders on the field needs to be a cooler head than our skipper, so I think it's a good pick, he's also going into the series after a good Australian tour with a century under his belt.
  6. Pant is probably going to be our pick in the two tests in Chennai, powered by his performances in Australia, not much more to say here.
  7. Patel/Pandya will probably depend on the pitch itself, honestly, Pandya doesn't bowl a lot and we played 3 spinners the last time we went there so I reckon we'll be playing Patel over Pandya since we play more spinners in India.
  8. Sundar and Yadav will be a doozy, imho, since Kohli clearly has a clear opinion on Kuldeep Yadav, however, Sundar is probably a better pick as he gives better batting depth and can act as the third spinner to Ashwin and Patel.
  9. Ashwin is an obvious pick, he's one of the best Indian spinners in the game right now and had a good run in Australia.
  10. Siraj would be my first pick but if I'm being honest he'll probably get pushed aside when the injured player comes back, who will be Ishant Sharma in this case, a pity, really, since Siraj probably has more potential and is a better investment for Indian cricket going forward.
  11. Bumrah is a no brainer, whilst test cricket on Indian soil is more foreign than foreign soil for him he has a very good average outside India and the conditions won't be too foreign since he has played a fair amount of domestic cricket in India.
Well, that's my thoughts on the eleven!
