THE image of the Australian cricket team has taken another battering with a majority of supporters blasting the behaviour of the players in Perth as "over the top and embarrassing".
With three Australians reported during the ill-tempered third Test against the West Indies, most respondents to a Fox Sports survey were critical of their antics.
Asked to rate the team's behaviour in Perth, 70 per cent listed it as "over the top and embarrassing", while just 17 per cent said it was "passionate but in the spirit of the game". Another 12 per cent rated it "awesome, that's how the Aussies play".
The growing image problem has been caused by Shane Watson's send-off of Windies skipper Chris Gayle and a confrontation involving Sulieman Benn, Brad Haddin and Mitchell Johnson.
Ponting addressed the behaviour at a team meeting yesterday while Haddin said that he should not have pointed his bat at Benn.
"It wasn't a good look pointing my bat," Haddin said. "It wasn't a good look for the fans and especially wasn't a good look for the kids so I'll be working on it to make sure it doesn't happen again.
"It was probably a bit too animated for what the occasion was so I apologise for that.
"We know the mistakes we made there. Let's move onwards and upwards."
While fans clearly do not rate the behaviour of Australia's cricketers, it appears Pakistan does not rate Australia's bowlers.
Batsman Misbah-ul-Haq said yesterday Australia's bowling was "suffering from a bit of a problem" and was not as good in the post-Glenn McGrath/Shane Warne era.
"I think definitely the standard of their bowling has really changed from then," he said.
"At that time they were having four frontline bowlers and all of them were match winners. Now it is a bit changed.
"They don't have Warne especially. Australia is suffering a bit of a problem in their bowling attack."
Australia is waiting on the fitness of Ponting (elbow), but it appears Pakistan is mindful of the skipper's perceived problems against the short ball.
Asked if Pakistan's quicks would attempt to rough Ponting up in the same way as young West Indian firebrand Kemar Roach, Misbah said: "It might be the game plan of the team what we are going to do."

Can't agree with the fans more. Good to see the players moving on
And Misbah there, having a sly dig at the bowlers. He must get ready for some chin music from the pacers now
