As Indian Selectors led by Kris Srikkanth announced the team for the Asia Cup, there started a murmur among the press reporters. No, there wasn’t any drastic change in the team apart from the inclusion of in-form Yusuf Pathan and Askok Dinda but the fact that there was the no Sehwag in the team and the reason given for his exclusion. One pretty much expected the exclusion but the reason given by Srikkanth for Sehwag’s exclusion stunned one and all. He said Sehwag was out of the team as a result of injury.
This makes one wonder how can an injured player play in Australia for so many games and why wasn’t he called back if he is injured and sent a replacement for him to Australia? When one of the reporter asked this question to Srikkanth, he lost his cool. He shot back to journalist, “You just shut up now, you don’t talk like this. You guys just shut up. I know what I am talking. If you bowl such googlies I will get angry and you will get angry. If you ask the same question after drafting it a bit differently, my asnwer will be the same. Do you think if you keep nagging me, I’ll keep quiet??The problem with you guys is that there has been a lot of speculation. And I am not here to clarify them. If you speculate, I cannot help. Otherwise you should come and sit in the meeting then,? he fumed at a particular scribe. ”
Now, a day after the incident, Sehwag has reportedly said that he demanded rest. Now, the question is why do selectors try to hush things up? If a player is injured, tell he is injured, if he is dropped, then say dropped. Why is there a need to say a cricketer that he is rested instead of telling he is dropped; just so that he doesn’t feel bad?
Rather than hushing things up, selectors should tell a player upfront that he is dropped (if thats the case) and make him realize that he needs to perform better and he can’t just take his place in the team for granted no matter what. Let the youngster feel proud of himself that he has earned his place in the national side and be proud to represent the nation rather than giving him a feeling of a stop gap player who is included just because a senior is rested or injured. Let the youngster believe that if he performs well, he can cement his place in the side even at the cost of a senior warming the bench.
Cricket Australia too, for a change hushed things up for a few days on Brad Haddin’s exclusion from the team but they soon revealed that he was dropped and the selectors, taking the interest of the team into consideration, dropped? even probably their best batsmen of all time after Sir Donald Bradman. Ricky Ponting himself accepted the fact that he is no more in the scheme of ODI unit of his team and his captain Michael Clarke even went on to reveal that he had something to do in Ricky Ponting’s sacking from the team which led him to retire from ODIs.
BCCI needs to be transparent enough. There is no need to keep the feelings of seniors or any non-performing player in mind as the player needs to understand the value of the place in the team. After all, BCCI or any cricket board and its officials?are expected to work in the interest of their national team and not for the senior members of it!
