Lee named in Twenty20 squad

Cricinfo staff

July 20, 2007

Australia have backed their World Cup-winning squad to repeat the job at the Twenty20 World Championship, with Brett Lee the only addition to the outfit that was successful in the Caribbean. Lee missed the World Cup with a serious ankle injury but has been named in Australia's 15-man group that will compete in South Africa in September.

Lee replaces Glenn McGrath, who retired after the trip to the West Indies, while Shaun Tait has also been chosen as he recovers from elbow surgery. Australia opted not to pluck any Twenty20 specialists from state cricket or test any untried talent in South Africa.

"We looked at the performances of some of the top domestic Twenty20 players, but ultimately we felt that the World Cup-winning side would adapt well and deserved the opportunity to prove that they can perform to the highest standards in both shorter forms of the game," Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, said. "It's fantastic to have Brett Lee back, fully fit and resuming his spot in the Australian side. He's back to training and raring to go."

The same players make up Australia's 14-man squad to tour India straight after the World Championship, although Brad Haddin was not included for that trip. Australia's seven-match ODI series with India begins at Bangalore on September 29, five days after the Twenty20 final.......

Twenty20 World Championship squad Matthew Hayden, Adam Gilchrist (wk), Ricky Ponting (capt), Michael Clarke, Brad Hodge, Andrew Symonds, Michael Hussey, Shane Watson, Brad Haddin (wk), Brad Hogg, Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Bracken, Stuart Clark, Shaun Tait.

Squad to tour India Matthew Hayden, Adam Gilchrist (wk), Ricky Ponting (capt), Michael Clarke, Brad Hodge, Andrew Symonds, Michael Hussey, Shane Watson, Brad Hogg, Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Bracken, Stuart Clark, Shaun Tait.

Australia A squad Phil Jaques, Chris Rogers, David Hussey, Adam Voges (capt), Cameron White, Luke Ronchi (wk), James Hopes, Andrew McDonald, Ashley Noffke, Cullen Bailey, Dan Cullen, Ben Hilfenhaus, Doug Bollinger, Stuart MacGill.

The Aussie A squad looks very very strong. Probably the next Aussie team in there.

Good to see Binga back for the 20/20 championship. I can't wait. I am really missing cricket.

Yes! Bollinger in Australia A!
6 of them have already served Australia so they will be unstoppable.

Starts in September, so yes, if I'm right, that is about when the first class season starts.

Bolinger is a destructive left armer. Played great last year and im personally not surprised to see him there.

Mitchell Johnson, Brett Lee and Shaun Tait together could be one of the quickest fast bowling trios for a long time and they could give some of the Indian batsman some trouble if they can get the ball to rise of short of a length.

The twenty20 squad is hard hitting, wicket taking and world cup winning so I doubt they will have any problems with them.

The A team squad is extremely strong too, seeing their first class records and for some, their international records. I believe that Phil Jacques, David Hussey, Cameron White and Stuart Macgill (to name a few) could likely get into to any other international team in the world for one of Tests or ODIs.

I woud love to see an A team world cup, I think you could uncover a lot of talent in that. But that is kinda going off on a tangent...and would be a practical nightmare.

Although decidedly quick, he has not done too well in the County Championship in England.

Like I've said on numerous other forums, it's a case of them being one of those players unlucky to be born in this era. If they'd been born in another era, they'd have racked up the runs and wickets for the Aussies. Unlucky in my oppinion.

I also want to see Rogers get a go. I think he is a very exciting prospect and I'd love to seem him get a gig.

[1]- Very well they could be. If Tait and Lee open the bowling then can get into openers and first few batters then Johnson come on and continue to give problems. Although the pace could make it easy for batsmen to just guide the ball around and play out the new ball.
Ofcourse there is the problem of injury. All 3 ahve already gotten some serious injurys and lee is just coming back from Injury (Not to sure about Johnson though)

[2]- As much as i would love to believe Jaques will make it as i think he derserved more chances after he debuted but Rogers has sparked and there has been a lot of banter over who should be choosen and i think Rogers has come out on top. This arguement will continue for a while. D Hussey im not to sure about as our Middle order is looking balanced and Cameron White probably not because Shane Watson is the allrounder.

[3]- Argh i always forget to see how the Blues players are going over there in the county championship!

Great to watch when on song. But just imagine when they all have an off day on the same day. It'd be chaos for the Aussies. We'd be getting spanked everywhere. Just imagine!
