Game doesn’t always seem to heed fast delivery input

For some reason, the hold LT or RT trigger input to make a delivery faster or slower doesn’t always seem to work; I can tell, because they are counted up to 3 in the appropriate tutorial. I’m supposed to hold the trigger down through jump and release, right? My controller inputs are all fully recognized in Win 10. What might I be doing wrong?
