Last night, I had possibly the most realistic session of cricket I've experienced in any game, in a Test Match on hard. Granted, it was lower down the innings, but North was still there and he went on to make a century. Anyway, I decided to completely ignore the colour of the bowling marker and bowled where I wanted to (usually on a 'real' good length). The AI left a lot, defended a lot, played and missed occasionally and smacked the odd crap one for four - just like real cricket. This went on for around a session and a half (before I saved to go to bed).
I was using custom fields (it's so much more fun to move fielders around like a real captain - 'that batsman looks uncomfortable with the short ball, he's getting a lot hitting him in the ribs - put a bat/pad or silly point in). I wasn't using daft exploits like packing the offside field and waiting for the AI to drive it in the air, just sensible cricket fields.
For me, if they can just fix these damn edges and get them to behave properly, we have a very good cricket game on our hands - that was the only problem in that session: too few chances. There were a few edges, but none carried. It was fun smacking Lee on the helmet two balls in a row, though!
I've also got a slightly new system for runouts and how to decide on whether to reload or not. Watch the 3rd Umpire replay and if it was a close decision, let it go. If it was a clearly suicidal one, reload. Until someone does something about it properly, that's the best I can come up with. It's a real shame, because other than that bug, the AI running in this game is the best I've ever seen - they push for twos/threes when they're on (you get some thrillingly close 3rd Umpire moments) and they drop the ball and run a cheeky single when the field allows it.
