Playing Durham. I have a first class bowling attack that nevertheless seems toothless in ODs, conceding at over 5rpo on even friendly pitches. And the batting... if I bat first, I'm lucky to hit 200 and usually collapse while chasing. I have pretty much cracked the FC and even do reasonably well in T20, but just can't seem to get a hang of ODs.

Help appreciated in following areas:
- Batting aggression. Just how to set it? Too aggressive doesn't seem to work even with wickets in hand.
- Bowling aggression/tactics

(so yeah, pretty much everything!)

Maybe your choosing bowlers more suited to the FC style of match?

Are you using a decent spinner in the middle orders with 0 agressions bars? Doing this stems the run flow hugely and normally results in wickets.

Are you using your bowlers well? i.e Not giving them too many overs, fast bowlers get sloppy when tired. Also, make sure you pick 5 bowlers...Don't rely on part timers to complete the 50 overs..Sometimes they pay off, but sometimes they can go for huge amount of runs.

Are you being too agressive in your bowling? I never go more then 1 aggression bar in ODI cricket when bowling. 1 bar in power plays, 0 bars in the overs with no restrictions.

Batting wise:

I normally start one batsman on 5 bars, the other on 4. This usually gets me 40-50 runs off the first ten overs. They are now set so move them both to 5-6 bars whilst the power plays are on. If I lose a wicket, number 3 comes in on 4 bars, if I lose another the number stems the wicket flow by going on 3 bars. Leave "set" batsmen on no less then 5 stars - they will tick the score over nicely. I never give a new batsman more then 4 bars except for an opener. In the last overs I normally go for one bar short of full aggression, this usually lasts for the last 10 overs but depends how many wickets I have in hand.

Hope that helps.

Thanks a ton mate! Have a game against Gloucestershire soon. Will let you know how it turns out.

(PS: Yeah, I was clearly going way too aggressive with my bowling. Batting tactics I use aren't all that different from yours. Guess I need a couple of real aggressive bats. Di Venuto & Mustard don't seem to be doing the job)

Thanks a ton mate! The bowling worked like a charm and restricted them to 150 odd on a pitch taking slight turn and sunny/cloudy weather. Bats still struggled to get to the total though :( But at least it was a win without me skipping the game!

I usually have all of my batsmen on 4 bars, 5 when they're set. In the last 10-15 (depending on wickets in hand) I go one short of full.

I start all batsmen on 4 bars, then through the middle overs up to 6, then for the last 10-15, full bars for a set batsman, and start batsmen coming in on 6, then move up one, then to full, pretty quickly. Usually gets me over 300 in 50 over matches.

In One-Dayers, i set by batsmen on 4 bars, 5 when their set, i never go to 6, i always seem to start a massive collaspe if i do.

Good work mate, glad it helped.

I also find batting 2nd in OD cricket is the way to go. About 75% of the time, the team batting second wins it seeems...

yeah. when I'm doing a story, I bat first but I always bowl first in my other matches. The only exception is when I'm doing international and I'm vsing Bangla or Zim with a strong side where I bat first and put 350 on the board and then I can easily bowl them out for <150.

good to know that I'm not the only ones who do certain things. It is just because it is more realistic if you bat first. Although I could just say that they won the toss and chose to bat.

I always bowl with 3 bars. Heck, with the new ball I put it on the most defensive field possible and let my opening bowlers bowl at full aggression - usually leads to a few early wickets. Then I tone it down to 3 bars, keep the field as it is (2nd most defensive one), and just rotate the bowlers.

I win a lot batting first. I use custom fields though, and that really helps to stop the boundries. Always have guys at 1) deep extra cover 2) deep mid wicket 3) deep backward point (15 degrees behind square), and long off. Sometimes long on or a long leg. Seems to work well. Other guys are in the ring at short cover, point saving 1.
