The ICC Knockout Cup was started in 1998 to help raise funds and spread awareness of the game in associate nations. With a direct knock-out format in place, every match had meaning and a single defeat meant elimination. It was short, sweet and thrilling while it lasted.
This league covers what could have been if the ICC had continued with the original Knockout Cup format and kept a more open-minded approach towards associates of the day, instead of turning it into the private club known as the Champions Trophy.
In this version, there will be 16 international teams participating in each edition. All the Test nations automatically qualify while the numbers are completed by the leading associates of the day. Each edition of the Knockout Cup takes place once every two years and is hosted by a promising associate nation.
The host nation for 1998 will be Bangladesh, who were just a year fresh from winning the 1997 ICC Trophy which earned them a ticket to the 1999 World Cup, where an upset of Pakistan led to them being awarded Test status the following year.

The knockout format and impartial draw meant there were a couple of surprises in store such as Zimbabwe and Denmark progressing to the quarter-finals ahead of cricketing powers England and India, albeit at the expense of lesser opponents. But wins are wins nonetheless.
1996 World Cup winners Sri Lanka eventually finished with the trophy after a ruthless display against South Africa in the final. South Africa didn't have too bad a tournament themselves, but were no match for Sri Lanka's spinners on a turning surface at Dhaka.
Muttiah Muralitharan was declared Player of the Tournament for his astounding 12 wickets at 12.33 from just 4 matches. Meanwhile, a 23-year old Jacques Kallis led the batting charts with 197 runs at 65.67 with 1 century and 1 half-century apiece.
Muttiah Muralitharan's 12 wickets at 12.33 earned him the Player of the Tournament award. He was simply a nightmare to face on Bangladesh's spinning pitches and the driving force behind Sri Lanka's success. He also averaged an astonishing 3 wickets per match.
After starting the tournament with a classy century to knock out the English, the 23-year old Jacques Kallis went on to lead the batting charts of the competition with 197 runs at 65.67. He also opened the bowling for his team in all but one match with moderate success.
Despite playing only 2 matches, Romesh Kaluwitharana effected more dismissals than anyone else in the tournament. He failed with the bat, but was well worth a place simply for his wicket-keeping.
Marvan Atapattu's batting didn't cause shockwaves, but he was easily the most consistent batsman of his team and of the tournament with 3 half-centuries from 4 innings. His 189 runs at 47.25 was second only to Kallis.
