IPL If Tendulkar was to go under the hammer

However, in asking what will, rather than should happen - it'll probably be in the region of $2-3 million.
The IPL has never been about paying players for how skilled they are. That's the thing with private franchises--they're looking to make money as much as they are looking to win. The IPL is still in its developmental stages, which is why franchises have to make money by attracting strong brands (such as Sachin). Sachin is clearly an iconic player of India and it is hard to imagine a situation where a franchise wouldn't stand to benefit, financially, from his presence in the team, regardless of how he performed.

If, and once, the league has matured, fans will appreciate victories as much or more than having a top star in the team. With only two completed tournaments, thus far, it is hard to really back a team rather than players. Consider the example of American sports. In the formative years, people paid to watch the top players in the game duke it out. Now, people pay to watch a winning team. With a few more years under its belt, I think fans will start yearning for a winning team. By then, Sachin'll probably be done with cricket.

Once again, Sohum has said practically everything that I intended to. So coming to the economics of the issue-

1. Given the form he's in, he'll get the highest salary of a "capped" $750,000 if Reliance doesn't do everything in its power to retain him, while, in the silent bid, the amount could go upto $2.5million.

2. If they do, we don't know the IPL's rules on retainers and the minimum, maximum or capped amount for the same.

3. As for the franchise buying him, its a toss-up between Sahara and Reliance. Maybe Mr.Mallya's UB Group, but who knows.

I was wondering what's the point to discuss this. Maybe he wont even play in the next years ipl.

Whosoever changed Sach 10dulkar's name to Chris Martin is Satan in disguise. :laugh

Sohum will not be a happy man after seeing this-
martin is so much more than just a player for the Mumbai Indian franchise--he is a brand. According to Forbes, martin was the second-highest grossing cricketer in the world last year at $8million after endorsements (the top being Dhoni). However, as a brand, martin is eons older than Dhoni. He's been bringing that money in year in and year out for about a decade.

Losing martin would not only dry up a lot of the endorsements but probably destroy fan allegiance as well.
