The IPL has never been about paying players for how skilled they are. That's the thing with private franchises--they're looking to make money as much as they are looking to win. The IPL is still in its developmental stages, which is why franchises have to make money by attracting strong brands (such as Sachin). Sachin is clearly an iconic player of India and it is hard to imagine a situation where a franchise wouldn't stand to benefit, financially, from his presence in the team, regardless of how he performed. However, in asking what will, rather than should happen - it'll probably be in the region of $2-3 million.
If, and once, the league has matured, fans will appreciate victories as much or more than having a top star in the team. With only two completed tournaments, thus far, it is hard to really back a team rather than players. Consider the example of American sports. In the formative years, people paid to watch the top players in the game duke it out. Now, people pay to watch a winning team. With a few more years under its belt, I think fans will start yearning for a winning team. By then, Sachin'll probably be done with cricket.
