IIT - Indian Institute of Technology. The international value?

From what my teacher has told me, IIT Delhi has gone to such heights only because of the political influence around the capital. From a study point of view, he said, Kanpur is the only one where serious studies happen to be found.

Amiya, I don't reccommend to start preparing for IIT JEE before 11'th. It just adds up to too much pressure and tension.
I am facing it mate. But its good. I am doing Brilliant Tutor & BMA IIT JEE package which are little advanced than my course. But ya it affect my current studies. But i don't worry about my school. School marks are not neccesarry for me.

You're talking about IIM :p

Indian Institute of Management - Ahmadabad is rated very-very highly throughout the world..

You went to Bits Dubai? I was considering that, is it any good? I asked them and they said the degree you get is the same as one as the degree from the India one, and the facilities all seem great, but their minimum requirements were very low compared to the Indian ones. How is it getting a job after it? Do they consider a degree from there the same as one from India?

To answer your questions:

Yes I did. I passed out this year. It is excellent for Mech, EEE, EIE and CSE. Not very sure for the other ones as they were started more recently.

I got the degree from Pilani, but now I believe its going to be a BITS Dubai degree because it has been accredited by the Ministy of Higher Education here requires you to have an independent degree.

Facilities are indeed very good. Mechanical Engineering labs and workshops are insane!

Minimum requirements are not very difficult for people living in GCC countries, but since I applied from India, the cut-off consideration for me was much higher than for a student from a GCC country. I believe the cut-off for EEE for a non-GCC applicant last year was 96.2% aggregate, and my XIth aggregate (in 2004) was 95.5%), which meant I would have missed out on this as well had I applied last year.

I got the job pretty easily. One aptitude test, followed by an interview in college, a second technical interview at Schneider's office in Jebel Ali, and woola! I was in. Like I said Mech, EEE, EIE and CSE students have got placed well (from my batch atleast, i.e batch of 2008).

Hope that answers your questions. Do not believe the junk that Gulf News posts about BITS, because they clearly dint take the feedback from the majority of the students.

Being an iitian, it is being sayed in india, that if you are a iitian, your 7 generation will need not to work.

That's rubbish.

I've heard IIT Kanpur is the best followed by Chennai.

It depends on the stream. IIT Powai (Mumbai) is good for Electrical Engineering.

I had done the same package's correspondence course. Take your 10th and 12th seriously, would be my advice. You can start preparing for IIT-JEE during XIth grade.

Ah, sweet.

On the website, it says this:

1.Candidates must have passed the requisite Qualifying Examination, which is the General Secondary Education Certificate Examination of Ministry of Education, UAE or Senior School Certificate Examination of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi, India, or its equivalent from any recognized State, National or International boards with a minimum 60% overall aggregate* of marks.

This is what turned me off. Minimum of 60%, whereas the India BITs requires 97% according to their website. What was the minimum average grade they ended up accepting when you were there? Cause a lot of school say a lower average than what they really accept. Is it not much higher than 60%, or a lot higher?

60% is minimum for application. Does not mean you will get through. When I joined in 2004, I knew one guy from Bahrain (GCC candidate) who got through Computer Science with 77%. The cut-off for EEE that year for us (non-GCC candidates) was 85 point something. They give preference to GCC candidates though.

If these are the requirements for BITS.What would be for IIT?

IIT is respected pretty much worldwide when it comes to the talent of the student earning the degree. However, when it comes to employment opportunities (at least in the US) I think you are more likely to get into a really good Master's program than landing a foreign job with a good salary. You may, of course, get a job in India or somewhere else in Asia if it's an MNC, but there will obviously be a salary differential based on the cost of living.

That's not to say that an IIT degree is not a gateway towards a job in an industrialized nation. Getting into a good Master's program will be easier and that will definitely propel you towards many good job offers.

Well Kshitij, I know many who cracked IIT and few my very close friends and relatives, and even I cracked it in 2004 but left it to pursue career in Medicine. Recently my cousin cracked it and he got a 82 rank and is in IIT Delhi. He was special from the beginning though.

All I can say is that you have to have that talent and speciality to start with . .then Passion and then got to be diligent to make it successful. I started it in 11th, but my aim was Medicine and Engineering was just an option.

If you have the talent then you will score good in school as well. That would help you develop a competitive attitude and will help you develop mental skills which help in tough hours.

15-16 hrs will not guarantee you. .i never did that. but quality time and what you study is more important. you can't be careless with any topic and should know all well. And give importance to schooling. By school you will realise are you special or not. If you can maintain good scores all over and other competitive exams with ease then you definitely have a fair chance of getting good rank.

I would only say gud luck.
