James Tredwell has the English cap in sight. A big "wooohooo" to all the Kent fans around :hpraise:hpraise

James Tredwell, the uncapped Kent offspinner, has been added to England's Test squad as cover for Graeme Swann, who has not fully recovered from the side injury that troubled him earlier in the tour, although the management are confident Swann will be able to take his place in the opening match at Centurion.

Swann missed the second Twenty20 international and was ruled out of the first two 50-over contests between the sides last month with the injury, but was replaced in the starting XI by Adil Rashid, the legspinner, on those occasions. However, Tredwell then joined the one-day squad for the remainder of the series.

Swann played in both the two-day matches against a South African Invitational XI at East London, collecting 6 for 55 in the first game and 1 for 65 in the second from a total of 27 overs.

"Graeme's injury is improving and we expect him to be available for the first Test starting on Wednesday," Andy Flower, the England coach, said. "But with a further three matches to come after Centurion we have decided that we need a 'like for like' replacement on hand for Graeme should this be required later in the tour."

When not with the senior squad, Tredwell has been based with the Performance Programme in Pretoria and he scored 70 in last week's match against a Titans President's XI.

This should probably be in the England vs South Africa thread, but also he is only there for if Swann is injured. I don't see England going with two spinners in South Africa.

Haha. I find it ironic that an article mentioning a spin bowler being selected for England highlights his batting performance over his bowling :D

Just for you Zorax, he took 69 wickets in the County Championship last season, at an average of 26.62 and a best of 8-66.

Good luck to him, but he's unlikely to play as Swann is most likely to be fit seeing as he bowled in the recent warm-ups.

And the fact that Rashid was in the squad before him, so is presumably 2nd in line. Going to need either a rank bunsen of a pitch and an injury to Swann for Tredwell to get a game. Good selection though, certainly a better option than Panesar or Batty. Interesting to note that this season is the first time that Tredwell's averaged under 35 in an English county season.

Rashid has really gone down at the moment though, has he not? He performed okay in the T20 WC and then he had a poor few games when he played the ODIs in SA. I reckon Tredwell > Rashid at the moment.

I don't think performances in a T20 or ODi game should have any impact on the Test side. There'd be no way Luke Wright would get picked for the Test squad if they did. Rashid had a very good season with bat and ball (albeit not as effective a season as Tredwell, but Tredwell was playing 2nd division iirc and 26 wickets at 31 is pretty good going), and I think he'd be the next guy in line; especially considering he was pointlessly dragged to the West Indies where he was stupidly overlooked in favour of MSP. I like Tredwell, but I'd be picking Rashid ahead of him right now.

Monty's really slipped off the radar hasn't he.

Rashid does seem better in the longer version though so it's a shame his poor performances earlier in the tour have affected his chances

Not surprising really given his recent form. He's been nothing short of terrible. Bowled horribly for England and then did sod all for Northants in his time playing County Cricket. He's really going to have to put some hard work in over the winter and then take some serious wickets at Sussex next season to stand a chance of getting back in the England set-up. Swann, Rashid and Tredwell are all rightfully ahead of him in the pecking order.
