I strongly disagree with the opening posters stance on wearing helmets. They were invented for a reason. They protect you, one day you get hit plumb on the face and you'll be thinking to yourself 'I wish I was wearing a helmet'. Believe me, i've seen a guy play a hook shot, play it completely early and get hit and then the next thing he knows he's picking his teeth of the floor.

It was made compulsory some time ago for anyone under 18. That said, I never had to wear one, and found it ruined my game.

Still, the more you wear it, the more you'll get used to it. Also no one said your grille had to be as tight as possible. Make it wider if it's interferring with your vision. Yes a ball will be able to fit through, but as you said, you're not trying to play the ball with your head ;)

I think it's a good idea wearing a helmet, plus if you ever want to play with people who will bounce you you might find you need a helmet and adjusting to one will be more difficult.
