Knocking in a bat is a continuous thing. When you get dints (or dents, not sure) in the bat, you are supposed to knock in around it and stuff, later in the bats life. I've read somewhere, the day you stop knocking in the bat is the day it goes in the scrapheap, or something similar. Bats are something you have to constantly maintain, oiling, sandpapering, knocking in, and generally looking after. Similar to a car, really.
