LBW law clarification

Thought I had this law sussed until today. I thought you cannot be given out LBW if the ball pitched outside the line of the wicket yet SA lost two batsman to balls that, when seen with Hawkeye, DID pitch outside the line before hitting the pads. Please help :(

You can't be out if the ball pitches outside leg stump. You can be out if it pitches outside off stump but you must be hit in line, unless the batsman is offering no shot.
