Microsoft Bing

I am loving it... I am now officially switched over to Bing (yes, I've dumped Google). I have gone for a more attractive search engine that looks stylish and cool to the eye. Bing gives me what I need (when I search; does it use the Google search engine also to retrieve searches?).

I love the image and the video search. Esp. image search is freaking awesome. It has a very nice gallery look to it when displaying image searches. When you move your mouse over an image thumbnail, it gives you details about the image resolutions, etc which makes it easy for me when looking for wallpapers and also its cool. I also love the way that a preview of the video plays (it plays small pieces from the original video and these pieces are picked randomly within the video) when you move your mouse over the video thumbnail (on the video search). Now coming to the suggestions

1. The white textbox in the homepage to enter our searches amidst the very attractive background image stands out like a sore thumb. Could you guys try to make the search textbox glossy and transparent (the way you have done for the "Explore" menu on the left)?

2. You guys should include Veoh as a source for video searches (collaboration with Veoh would be good). They host movies and many good videos. I personally watch lot of movies from Veoh and so do many of my friends.

3. When clicking on a video and watching the full video, the embedded video from the respective source is small and it has a huge black background. Instead the black background could be avoided and a white background that matches the background of that page would make it look better

As I browse through Bing more, will post more (if I have more!). On the whole, its a terrific entry by Microsoft into the search engine market. Microsoft has added its gloss and color to search and I am sure this will be a huge hit among the audience. Right now, Bing is my homepage and my search provider for IE 8.

Yea they look the same. And what you guys have with the area code is pretty much what I was talking about. Obviously again no use to me in it's current state :p But I forget my area code at times and the google front page doesn't sort my confusion.

Thanks for the feed back :) There's no ETA on when this feature will be arriving in NZ... no disrespect to NZ, it's just a process.

In fact, I don't know if you saw it, but an ocean in New Zealand was featured on our home page yesterday.

How come when I type in Bing.com I get the UK version of the site? Bing.com.au works, as does live.com.au. Had this problem with the old live search as well.

Must say when I first saw that image just thought it was an image, but after looking again today I see it changes and the fact you can scroll around the image for things is pretty cool feature.

For the homepage if you could add something similar to what iGoogle does then I certainly could make this my home page. Just having the ability to see News, Weather and my email on that one page is very helpful.

I think one of the reasons the image search works is you don't move away from the page. Once you scroll down it keeps loading more images as necessary. Kind of reminds me of the Silverlight DeepZoom technology. :)

Google all the way

It just like Mac competing with Windows but the difference is Google owns Windows here for majority :p

I like what I've seen of it. The results are pretty accurate and in some cases more relevant than Google's. That might change if bing gains in popularity and search engine optimizers target it. Its good to see some competition though.

Maybe the preferred language in your browser is set to British English.

It's actually got an iLife feel to it despite being Microsoft (although I guess Microsoft have taken most their good ideas in the past from Apple).

I really like the Image search of Bing and video search is just awesome. It's great feature just move your mouse to that video and video starts playing automatically and we dont need to go to page to play video. Searching is also fast and smooth and video loads so quickly. I may add it to bookmarks.

The video playing though, is only a short clip of it, and isn't the entire video.

Yeah, because there isn't a en-AU package, I get the UK one plus an Aussie dictionary for Firefox. I assumed it was IP based, going to google.com got me the Australian page regardless.

Sure enough, changing the Firefox language to AU gets me the right page. I suppose it is desirable to be able to override the IP in that way, but I'd be nice if they gave you the choice the first time around between your browser detected language and the location detected language.

Regardless, there still seems to be a bit of leftover live branding, Bing Maps Australia is at maps.live.com.au, with maps.bing.com.au taking you to the main bing page. Actually as a whole bing maps Australia needs some work.

Aaron from the Bing Outreach Team here...

What city are you in when you're seeing the problem? You can PM me if you don't want to post here. This will help us out a lot.

You can also make sure Bing will be set to Australia by clicking on whichever country name you're seeing in the upper right and then clicking on "Australia" when it takes you to the page that lists all countries.

Thanks!

My IP usually resolves to being in Artarmon in Sydney, where my ISP is based. Changing my Firefox browser language to en-AU worked initially, but now even setting it as en-GB again is still getting me the Australian page. So for me and for now at least it is fixed, or was a completely unrelated issue, which is odd as I've seemingly always had to go to ninemsn to get the Australian search before (and as such just used Google).

Thanks so much for the feedback :) I've already submitted your previous two comments to the team and now just submitted this. If you see any other problems going on you can just post it here and I'll pass it along. When rolling out a new product like this it's great to get feedback from people like yourself.

Just thought of our conversation here when I saw today's Bing background image. Another awesome pic of NZ (Milford Sound)... I guess I really gotta get there!
