My computer has a developed a problem over the past few weeks. When i hit the on button on my PC it starts to boot up and the noise of all the fans is heard and then it stops and all that can be heard (and i've opened the case and had a look) is the cpu fan rotating slowly. However when i hold in the power button and restart the computer it boots fine. Can anyone help me with this problem?

I suspect the power supply.

I don't get u.are u saying that on holding on the power button allows u to boot into the computer, while only pressing it once doesn't boot it?

i think the problem is that if he presses the start up button for a short time (i.e 1/2 second) the computer fan goes around slowly, but when he holds the button down before starting the computer up, the computer works fine.

i think there is sumthing wrong with ur button.

for example.....i dont use my power button for turnin on the pc, instead i use the keyboard.

coz when i press my power button, it gets stuck and remains pressed....which makes my comp start for few seconds before restarting it again n again.

try. check...and get ur button fixed.

I seem to have sloved the problem by telling the bios i have removed my floppy drive

when i turn on my pc the fans are quiet after about 3 seconds the cpu fans get much louder, dunno if its the same prob as yours because infact this should happen.

well on a artic freeze cpu cooler anyway

My fans make a very big noise when my computer is overload, like if i am playing a game, or if many many programs are opened.

Take it to a Computer doctor it probably has a virus :D.
