ODI should be scrapped

@garryjo82 : I thought we were talking about TV viewership.

Anyways, obviously average crowd attendance for IPL will be higher. IPL matches have rarely featured "neutral" or "non-home" teams in matches. Whereas, World Cup 2015 figures include more than a dozen games that include neutral teams, and a lot of them were associate teams. A Zim vs UAE game is not going to pull in much crowd, is it? Whether it is T20 or ODI.

I agree, that T20 is more popular than ODIs right now. But ODI is still very much significant as far as viewer interest, viewership and revenue generation goes on the international level. Plus as pointed out before - it is a better test of skills

what you guys think over this issue?

I mean , specially after emergence of t20 format , i dont find any reason of ODI existence now , IMO

Neither ODI having that charm like test matches , nor excitement like t20
and specially when you want to expand this game in new associate countries such as ireland, scotland, IDEA of ODI become meaningless in current time

THere should be only 2 formats of cricket game

TEST and T20
Completely agreed

"World T20 and World cup 2015 viewership were on similar levels."

From where you have done your research? as per my knowledge and gathered data from internet , its clear that wt20 format go much ahead than world cup in terms of revenue and tv viewership.

source - ICC T20 World Cup was watched by 730 million viewers in India - The Economic Times

The ICC World Twenty20 that ended earlier this month saw cumulative in-home TV viewership in India reach 730 million, an increase of 114% over the previous edition.

The India versus Pakistan encounter rated 17.3 across the Star Sports network and Doordarshan in India, becoming the best rated Twenty20 game ever since the final of the World Twenty20 in 2007. It reached 83 million people in the country.

South Africa-based broadcaster SuperSport saw ratings increase by 32% compared to the last edition of the ICC World Twenty20 two years ago, while in the UK, the men's final saw a peak audience of 2.45 million, which is a record for any cricket match broadcast on Sky Sports.

In the United States of America, on Willow, the coverage was watched in over 1.4 million television households.

In terms of a format ODI is better as you can use tactics and isn't over in a blink. The teams aren't filled with medium pacers and big guys with huge bats swinging at everything...
for me T20 format is much better

T20 is way popular than ODI bro , this is the reality

even though a t20 match can never be won without a good fielding and top notch bowling in slog overs specially,

btw have you seen that delhi vs punjab match, top class leg spin bowling by amit mishra 4 over 11 runs 4 wkt. he proved himself the real deciding factor of this match.

Winning a t20 match need some extra good t20 skills. and if t20 win go by pure luck then why australia could not able to achieve even a single title after 6 Wt20 cups.currently they are ranking at 6 position in ICC t20 ranking

True

This post is dedicated to the thread creator and the folks who are agreeing to the discussion made so far. Very long but important argument from my side although it is my personal opinion.

Test cricket is the core crust of Cricket. We all know that test cricket is the only format which the players used to play in the early days of Cricket. Then followed ODIs later followed by T20s. Current generation feels test cricket as a boring format which is very true. It is long, boring & time consuming. But is the only format which helps the players to display their skill. It is the real test for batsman to get things right and bat for as long as team requires them to do.

ODI on the other hand is a good format which is quite enjoyable. 50 overs per side - why on earth it is considered too long and time consuming? It is the only format where the bowlers and batsman are tested. Just imagine, a t20 player faces only 24 balls and bowls only 24 ball in his entire playing innings which doesn't determine his skill in either batting or bowling. A batsman faces atleast 6 ball from a bowler which is quite less when compared to ODIs or test. There is very less room for the bowlers to bowl according to his skills and variation within this 6 balls to a batsman. He gets exposed to the batsman in ODIs where he has to bowl atleast 25 ball to a batsman.

In both the circumstances, we get to see that bowler doesn't get a complete time to display his talent in T20s. If he gets smashed for a boundary then he gets tensed and missout his line and length which he wants to bowl.

For instance, a bowler named B is bowling in t20s and get smashed for 30 runs in his two over with the economy of 15/over. Then captain tends to change the bowler which indirectly effects the consistency. He gets tensed and bowls even worse than he bowled. ODI on the other hand allows him to express himself with 60 balls to be bowled.

My argument is that the skill or talent can't be expressed in T20 while it can be done in ODIs and Tests. If you guys are worried about the revenue from matches, it is because peoples' effection and passion towards their home team. They want to support the 11 men team representing their city/country and winning them the match or entertaining them in different aspects of game like batting, bowling or fielding. I bet, we Indians who watch IPL ball-by-ball don't even watch an bbl/spl/bpl innings(nearly half of the IPL viewers.) We can't bother much about viewership of different formats. People are tired of watching T20 games. There were t20 series played all over the world as a practice to WT20. That is why Asia Cup was played in T20 format and we all know this. IPL games are not full house btw. There are 2-3 stands which are empty in every stadium this year. The reason is that there has been no ODI games in India since October and people are tired of watch T20 games.

WE NEED ODI GAMES DESPERATELY. Just think for a second. If we scrap ODIs then people lose interest in T20s. We need a format to keep an interest in people and give equal amount of satisfaction.

To be honest, I have lost interest in T20s now. India is playing T20 since January. First Australia tour, then Asia Cup, World Cup and now IPL. Honestly, I am waiting for these T20 games to end. But, it is not the same case in ODI or Test. I enjoy watching those formats again and again. T20 is just too short. Yes, I enjoy it. But I won't get the same satisfaction as watching the longer format of the game. It should not even be decreased to 40 overs. Whatever it is now, that's just fine. Personally, I prefer tests > ODI >T20. I didn't even like the idea of Asia cup being introduced as T20 format. I know they made it as 20-20 as T20 WC was nearing, sure. But, I would have enjoyed more if it were a 50 over cup as it was before.

I agree that If cricket has to grow, T20 would be the main interest for the newer countries as it is a shorter format. But, once they(newer countries) improve, they have to be introduced to the longer format. Afterall, that(longer format) was the way cricket was played in the initial days. ODI should never ever be scrapped.

I am not talking about revenues and stuff. I am talking as a cricket fan who enjoys watching the game.

I appreciate the efforts you put here but you still are not able to give me satisfactory reply , yes Test cricket is the real platform for showing skills and completely love this format(good only for tv viewership though to some extent ) then why we need ODI?
Playing ODI bilateral series are meaningless and it will not help to this sport for any good , in spite of the fact cricket world cup can only be better played with this format if we reduce it upto 40 overs per side.

on the other side T20 is the format we can use for making this game real popular in new associate countries such as IRELAND,scotland,Netherland , these m******s can never be able to beat any major test playing nation such as India or Australia not even in ODI and then what would be the outcome? you all know that, cricket have better chance to become real global popular with T20 format only

asia cup between 3 countries(ind, pak,sl) only lol , because hongkong or bangladesh could not be able to defeat them in ODI . so boring .

just look at the result of recent asia cup, how amazingly bangladesh give competition to INDIA.

yes as a fan it might be your opinion ,but think about it from different perspective , i hope you can come to agree with my point

Cricket is not meant to be popular. If it was so, then we could've seen many associate countries with their respective cricket team. They need to perform well and work hard to be in international sector. T20s are not the way to improve their skills. In fact, they lose what they currently possess. T20s are appreciated to some extent but not to the extent of scrapping ODIs.

Just to let you know, I'm tired of watching T20s. I love to watch IPL every year but this year being an WT20 championship year has spoilt all the fun of IPL. IPL is boring this year which can be clearly seen with empty stands in the stadiums especially in Bengaluru, Dharamsala, Rajkot, Delhi and Hyderabad.

We watch cricket for entertainment and self-satisfaction. Whats the outcome if we have loads of boring T20 games? . Test is again a boring format. We need ODIs without any cut-off in overs. Its not a county cricket. It is an international format. So considering all this facts, ODIs are needed.

So, you didn't watch India's tour of Bangladesh for 3 odi? Bangladesh defeated India. They are no more a weak team. They can give a good fight, if not win. They even defeated SA, Pak and I am sure they would have defeated SL too.
