United States v Serbia - Preview
Round of 16
Match: Serbia v USA
Stadium: Free State Stadium, Bloemfontein
Kick-off: Sun June 27, 3pm BST
Group C runners-up USA take on Group D winners Serbia on the back of their impressive performances against Slovenia and Algeria. Under the guidance of Bob Bradley, the Americans have become one of the most well-balanced sides at this year’s finals, organised in defence and clinical in attack.
Meanwhile, Radomir Antic’s men have nothing to lose in this match, having already fulfilled their initial goal of reaching the second round for the first time in their history. The winners of this match will advance to the quarter-finals to face Argentina or South Africa in Cape Town on 2 July, with the losers set to make a premature return home.
KEY CLASH
Landon Donovan v Nemanja Vidic
The success so far of United States has been built on their team ethic but they do possess one outstanding individual in Los Angeles Galaxy's Landon Donovan. He scored twice in the win against Slovenia and it will be the job of Serbia’s Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic to stop Donovan's possession as well as his penetrating runs from midfield.
PROBABLE TEAMS
USA (4-4-2): Howard, Cherundolo, DeMerit, Onyewu, Bocanegra; Donovan, Edu, Bradley, Dempsey; Buddle, Altidore.
Serbia (4-4-2): Stojkovic, Ivanovic, Vidic, Subotic, Kolarov; Krasic, Kacar, Stankovic, Kuzmanovic, Tosic; Jovanovic, Zigic.
PREDICTION
USA have been very impressive in their last two group games but you cant underestimate Serbia who topped Group D ahead of Germany. At the end of this match Serbia will be left disappointed because USA are a much better team overall.
