Power for Playstation 3 - The Cell

IBM, Sony and Toshiba - the three companies behind the 'Cell' microprocessor - will formally detail the chip's workings at the International Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) on 6 February 2005, the trio said today.

The heart of the Playstation3 will be the new chip (or rather chip set) developed by Sony, Toshiba, and IBM. The companies will collectively invest more than $400 million in the next five years to design a "supercomputer-on-a-chip" for the PS3. The name for this technology is "grid" (formerly called "cell") and appears to be targeted squarely at the possibilities of parallel and distributed computing over the internet. Grid computing is a variation of distributed computing, and presumably involves networked game machines sharing software, processing power and data. Okamoto also said that networking applications including downloadable software would be integral to Sony's Playstation3 console. A recent report (May 5 2002) from the Japanese News Agency Kyodo said that the Playstation 3 would work over superfast fiber optics connections and would be Sony's first console to run games without a digital video disc. Sony also is considering offering the new chip to other companies for use in televisions and electronics equipment, Kyodo said. The details on Sony's next-generation console, or the unofficial PlayStation 3, just keep slipping through the cracks, as Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. and nVidia have revealed that they've been collaborating on PS3 technology, mainly advanced graphics and entertainment. The computer graphics processing unit (GPU) that's in development will incorporate nVidia's next-gen GeForce and SCEI's system solutions for "next-generation computer entertainment systems" employing the Cell microprocessor.

"In the future, the experience of computer entertainment systems and broadband-ready PCs will be fused together to generate and transfer multi-streams of rich content simultaneously," assures Ken Kutaragi, executive deputy president and COO, Sony Corporation, and president and Group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "In this sense, we have found the best way to integrate the state-of-the-art technologies from nVidia and SCEI. Our collaboration includes not only the chip development but also a variety of graphics development tools and middleware, essential for efficient content creation."

"We are thrilled to partner with Sony Computer Entertainment to build what will certainly be one of the most important computer entertainment and digital media platforms of the twenty-first century," adds Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO, nVidia. "Over the past two years Nvidia has worked closely with Sony Computer Entertainment on their next-generation computer entertainment system. In parallel, we have been designing our next-generation GeForce GPU. The combination of the revolutionary Cell processor and Nvidia's graphics technologies will enable the creation of breathtaking imagery that will surprise and captivate consumers."
Two years, eh? The PlayStation 3 is clearly well into development, and it's only a matter of time before more breaking news and possibly even first images of the system emerge. When they do, you'd better believe we'll have them for you!

Memory: Memory is an extremely important component to any computer system, and Sony has already ensured that the PlayStation 3 will contain some of the best memory on the market. Sony has licensed XDR DRAM for use will all of their Cell applications, including those of the PlayStation 3. XDR DRAM was developed through a joint effort by Elpida, Toshiba, and Rambus and will offer a bandwidth of at least 3.2 GHz (which is eight times that of today?s best-in-class PC memory). The architecture allows the memory to be expanded up to 6.4GHz, so it is unclear as to which bandwidth Sony will choose. There has also been no mention of how much memory Sony will choose, as that strongly depends on how much on-chip memory they decide to delegate.

Online: The next incarnation in the PlayStation series will most likely feature a broadband modem. Broadband internet service is spreading rapidly over the United States, Japan, and parts of Europe with a minimum of 50% coverage by the time the PlayStation 3 is released. Online console gaming is becoming more popular by the day and Sony has already shown support for such gaming on the current PlayStation 2. If shared computing is implemented, a broadband connection will be necessary to benefit from other systems in standby. A dial-up modem will most likely not be included as the demand for such a device is rapidly declining and in all likelihood, games will not be able to transfer data quick enough over a phone line for online gaming. SCEE president and COO, David Reeves said "Sony hope?s that all users will have a Broadband Internet connection at the time of purchase." When asked about how fast the connection would need to be, he said, "it?s going to have to be 2 or 3 MB per second, something like that. Ken Kutaragi?s even talking about 30MB per second! And when it gets to that, then it is broadband distribution, and people then can just download whatever game they want. But it's got to be secure, and that's where DNAS (Sony's online security protocol) comes in."

Blu-Ray Disc: The next-generation format designed to provide higher storage capcity than DVDs. Single-layer Blu-Ray discs are able to hold around 25Gb with the dual layer version holding around 50Gb. EA and VUG are the first large game companies to decide on a standard. Blu-ray already has a crucial foothold in the games industry thanks to Sony's decision to use it in the next-generation PlayStation 3 console. The PlayStation 3 may well be one of the first Blu-Ray consumer devices to win widespread acceptance - just as the PlayStation 2 helped to drive the early adoption of the DVD standard. You can play PS1, PS2, CD, DVD, and BLU-RAY Disc on PS3!!!
PS3 system will be in the market for 7-10 years until PS4 comes

Quick Update:

Online: Sony Online Entertainment has revealed that PS3 will support online micro-transactions (purchasing and downloading new game content for a nominal fee), while also commenting that it expects users will soon be able to interact with a single online game through multiple platforms - including PS3.

Blu-ray and HD-DVD Join Forces!!!

According to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, a Japanese newspaper, Sony and Toshiba are expected to abandon the Blu-ray and HD-DVD formats respectively to work on a new medium that will bring together both standards.

You do realise they're just renders, and not at all representative of real gameplay graphics?

The graphics have improved from PS2 thats for sure, the car does look real but the trees aren't that well done and that gives away that it's just a game.
