With the news of the signings of Gerrard and Cannavaro, the mood in the camp definatly lifted and the players appeared more focused on their roles at training. The first signings under Hiddink appeared to give the team a greater belief that this year could be the season for success.

The emphasis was again on fitness for the squad in the heat of Lyon. Raul, Ronaldo, Robinho and Cassano were again taken aside for shooting practice ahead of the next match with Lille. After the session the team mate the trip to the northern city of Lille ahead of the third match of the pre season tour.

After settling in Lille over night, we had our first run at the Grimomprez-Jooris, the Lille home stadium in which over 13,000 tickets had been sold for tomorrows clash. The training session was far lighter for the squad, the emphasis based on tactics that can be used to break down the defence. Lille are expected to go into the match with a diamond midfield formation much like Real.

Future matches on this tour may now be more focused on achieving a result after the 3-1 drubbing by Lyon last week. While it is important to achieve and keep match fitness prior to the start of the season, it is also important to achieve success to build confidence between the players.

Steven Gerrard and Fabio Cannavaro also joined the squad today and are expected to be named on the bench for the match against Lille.

The Teams:

Lille: Coach Cluede Puel has opted to go with the diamond midfield formation with 4 at the back and 2 up front. Midfielder Mathieu Debuchy holds the key for Lille and can make some devistating runs from the left hand side of midfield.

Real Madrid: Manager Hiddink again sticks with his trial 4-4-2 diamond formation against a team expected to play the same way. Zidane is shifted to the right with Cassano given the role of attacking midfielder. Ronaldo sits on the bench after some dissapoining performances while Graverson slots into the midfield. Cicinho has also impressed under Hiddink and starts next to Woodgate in the centre of defence.

Glad to see the manager sticking with Raul upfront. Playing Cassano as attacking midfielder is an intfresting change. Zizou has played on the left before and has done well. He is after all a wizard!

1st Half:

22 min: In form goal scorer David Beckham turned provider early for Raul as the away side got off to a perfect start after 22 minutes. Beckham crossed the ball in from the left hand side for Raul to head towards goal from just outside the 18 yard box. The captain netting a stunning header as Real went up 1-0.

2nd Half:

60 min:

Guti, Ivan Helguera
Zidane, Cicinho

Hiddink makes his first change of the match replacing the fatigued Zidane and Cicinho. Zidane making way for the fresh legs of Guti on the left hand side of midfield while Cicinho is replaced by Helguera in the centre of defence, allowing the spaniard to earn some match practice.

66 min: Robinho continues his impressive start to the pre season with a cracking volley to give Real a convicining 2-0 lead. Robinho latching onto a miss timed clearence from Makoun, the young Brazlian under 21 representative firing the ball low into the corner.

69 min: Raul scores his second of the match after Robinho heads towards goal. The captain finishing the looping header from inside the six yard box. Lille keeper Sylva is having an ordinary day to say the least while Raul appears to have found some form.

72 min:

Baptista, Diogo, Sergio Ramos
Beckham, Roberto Carlos, Michel Salgado

Hiddink brings off defenders Michel Salgado and Roberto Carlos, along with David Beckham to allow Sergio Ramos, Diogo and Baptista to have a run. With the match well and truely in control, the trio earn a chance to impress the management.

86 min: Robinho continues his impressive pre season under Guus Hiddink after a blistering free kick past Tony Sylva to extend the Madrid lead to 4-0. Real Madrid now looking far more convincing up front with a much more attacking mindset.

Real have been dynamite against moderate teams but they have shown quite the opposite form against better teams like Lyon. This vast difference might just be the difference that might separate them from the La Liga title. I expect Guus to plug this hole.

thats very true however Lille finished in the top 4 from memory in last seasons french domestic league so they are no pushovers. but the bar will definatly have to be raised. the friendly against Chelsea will be a better guage i think

I think Guus along with the news of the new signings have made the Real Madrid players perform so much better in this game. Great comeback after the Lyon defeat.

A very dominant performance by a Real Madrid team still stinging from the 3-1 loss to Lyon last week. Raul and Robinho turned in superb performances to put further pressure on out of form Ronaldo to perform. Real would be extremely happy with the performance from their strikers, with all four shots on target resulting in goals. The faul count for both teams was higher than Hiddink would have been happy with and may be something Real look to change in the coming matches.

Raul and Robinho were the picks for Real Madrid. Both netting twice in the match to stake claims for starting roles in the season opener next month. However Guus would be most pleased with the performance of the backline, with the return of Roberto Carlos assisting in the away team not conceding any goals.
